BMW M3 Akrapovic System

Hi everybody,

i am switching from Porsche 911 to BMW M3 Coupe and will take delivery of a M3 Black&White Edition soon.

I had the chance to test a M3 from our local M-Pool for 2 weekends ... and i am quite impressed by the car. Even the DKG was a real winner, although i thought i would go for a manual ... in fact i really started to love it.

It will be my new daily driver ... and the two seats in the back+trunk do help a lot with two little kids.

The only thing i would like to improve is the lack of low-end torque underneath 4500 rpm.

Therefore i'd like to ask whether somebody has installed an Akrapovic exhaust system, which should help to solve the issue !???

Any comments appreciated ...

Short of installing a turbo or a supercharger, there is no fix for lack of low end torque. BMW tuned these engines to rev sky high and produce nothing down low, there is no easy fix for the defect.

About the only way around that is to install a much shorter, numerically higher rear end, to increase the torque multiplier at the wheel.

No exhaust system will produce meaningful low end torque boost, all exhausts are tuned for more HP at the top end, and that's a polar opposite to low end torque.

Best advice? Keep the revs sky high in the powerband for instant response, you picked the wrong car if what you want is low end torque, instant throttle response.

Forget the exhaust, it won't help much. Just keep the rev figure high when driving...or buy a turbo charged car next time.

My wife's M3 Cab DKG has the same issue and this is why I love driving this car on the Autobahn but I hate driving it in the city.

The Akrapovic exhaust will only make the exhaust tone louder (and more annoying), something the M3 really doesn't need because the exhaust tone is just perfect.

Save your money.

Thank you for the input ... i thought they have a good reputation in the automotive industrie ... isn't the GT3 exhaust system of the new RS made by them ??

Don't get me wrong: I absolutely want that car ... just thought i could fix that minor issue.

As for the turbo ... i just sold my 993tt WLS ;-)

The graph above with just an exhaust on an atmospheric car? Keep dreaming.

This graph looks like what you would get with more boost from an ECU on a turbo car...

They have a well-deserved reputation for their skills at welding titanium, which does not necessarily mean that they have that much experience of developing exhaust systems to optimize torque / power output.

Do you really think you're going to "feel" an increase of 20-30 Nm ? I doubt it.

You sold your 993 TT WLS for a BMW M3 ? Wow.

You have the same problem I have with the M3: you come from a turbo charged engine to a high rev engine. I'm afraid you'll never really get used to it but it.

On my Vantage (n/a 4.3L 380hp) I had to spend over $10k to feel some small difference in the end (factory ECU + air box + rear exhaust for 20-30Nm and 40hp) and at the expense of a much louder car, great for a weekend fun car but not for a daily driver...

Additional 30NM and 20 hp is claimed since the full exhaust system gets 100 CELL cats and get rid of the cats jut after the headers.

Futhermore full system saves 23 kg over stock exhaust system.

If won't cure the low end torque issue but it will make the car more responsive and lighter.

If the money is not the main concern, I would go for it.

I haven't heard in real life but I read on M3 forums that it is not so loud and it is more quiet than most of the aftermarket exhaust.

It is described as "being loud but not annoying, close to factory tone."

However, I don't really know Smiley

Well,

if you want to trust "sportauto"-magazine ... the akrapovic system is good for approx. 1 second at 80-120 km/h through the gears 4/5/6 ... same for 0-200 km/h.

I don't know whether you feel it ... but you would see it ;-)

0-200 kph acceleration improvement by 1 second through exhaust only ? I highly doubt it.

By the way, as far as I know BMW Motorsport M3 has full akrapovic exhaust.

Also there is a rumour that Arvin Marator has some difficulty about supplying GTS titan. exhaust, so MAYBE Akrapovic would supply titan . exhaust of the M3 GTS. Smiley

Den Beweis dafür erbringt er ad hoc. Beim Spurt auf 200 km/h nimmt er der Serie eine knappe Sekunde ab. Bei den Elastizitätsmessungen fällt der Vorteil noch deutlicher aus. Und last but not least gibt sich der vordergründig unscheinbare weiße Riese auch bei der negativen Beschleunigung keine Blöße. Er verzögert giftig und standfest. Dank anderer Bremsbeläge - ein weiterer technisch kleiner Schritt mit letztlich ebenfalls großer Wirkung.

The only modification concerning the engine performance is the Akrapovic System ... and approx. 50 kg less weight ... at least as far as i understand?!

You can cross-check the results with the sportauto-test of the regular M3.

My friend had the full titanium Akra exhaust on his M3 (until he sold it recently). He thinks it makes a difference to the lower end, and it sounds glorious! Btw, if anyone in Australia is after one, we have that system sitting at our mechanic's place for sale. He will let it go cheaply as he rather that than waste it.

I still doubt that an exhaust alone could improve 0-200 kph acceleration time by one second.

Comparisons would only be possible if they use the very SAME car for it.

Akrapovic had some good press lately and I'm pretty sure he makes high quality systems but we shouldn't expect wonders from a LEGAL exhaust system only.

This applies only for the slip-on system.

You are aware of loosing your insurance coverage ? Not worth it in my opinion, especially since anybody can actually SEE the system.

I still doubt that you can feel 20-30 Nm more torque but go ahead if you really want it.
