    24 hours in an RS60

Porsche West London very kindly lent me an RS60 for a day last Saturday, because of my interest in purchasing a 987S.

The Result: I have put down a deposit for them to find me my ideal spec car in the next 3 months! :-)

I have to say that the 3.4 987S is absolutely stunning in it's all round performance - I could not fault it at all! I have driven a few nice cars briefly (Murcie, 430 Spider, 997 GT3, 996 Turbo, etc) and the Boxster S is up there as one of the best and most fun cars I have ever driven!

    My thoughts on the options:

    1. PASM - A MUST HAVE IMO as the car handles like it's on rails and the ride is much nicer on London roads in "Normal" setting on 19s compared to a Non-PASM car on 18s (they let me drive one of those on the same morning I picked up the RS).

    2. PSE - OMG! 2nd and 3rd gear through the Hatfield tunnel, and the sound in general is very addictive!

    3. Thicker sports steering wheel - loved it!

    4. Sports seats - After actually using them for 24 hours I realise they are great and very supportive!

    5. Bi-xenons - the RS had normal lights and they were not significantly better than my Golf with Philips Xtreme Vision bulbs (seriously!) - so I would buy a car with Xenons for sure.

    6. PCM sat nav - I couldn't figure out how to use it!

    7. Stereo - it was awful! Not sure how good the BOSE is but I would definitely go for a stealth aftermarket job (though I hardly used it and preferred the engine noise!).

I would not have been able to make an informed decision on these options if OPC West London had not been so generous in just giving me the keys and saying "see you tomorrow"! Great customer service... And they know how to sell car for sure!! It's going to be a painful 3 months but I hope to join the fold soon! :-)

PS: I'm also glad people call this the "poor mans 911" or dismiss it as a "girls car" - if they knew how great it was they'd be much more envious!

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

    nice post, thanks for sharing!

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

Congratulations on your taking the plunge - now the long wait begins to find the right car.

The Porsche sound system is diabolical. Even the Sound Package Plus is horrible and a complete waste of money. One of my regrets is not repeat - ordering the Bose I had in our first car. I wouldn't put anything non-Porsche in the car.  I notice you've not listed the heated seats as a must have - you'd really miss them on those crisp top down early spring blasts.

When kinrara and myself did a tour of dealerships looking at colour options, we met a guy called Mike Shipp at West London - one of the most knowledgeable and professional guys either of us had ever met in a Porsche dealership.

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

Thanks Dreamcar! I shall ask if Mike is still around...

My final "must have" spec is as follows:

    1. PASM
    2. Bi-xenon lights
    3. Sports seats
    4. Heated seats

Nice to have items (I'm not too bothered about these):

    1. PSE - can retrofit
    2. Thick steering wheel - can retrofit
    3. PDC - would heklp with parking in London
    4. Cruise control - can retrofit
    5. BOSE - not a big fan of them but has to be more acceptable than stock!

    The wait is painful!!

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

Well all I can say is I wouldn't get too "het up" about the sports seats, the standard items are just fine, sports seats might have the advantage if you plan to track your car but as my expensive mistake with them proves you have to be really sure that both you and your partner find them comfortable! I'd agree with your other "must haves" though.

PSE is easily retrofittable, Bournemouth fitted mine in a couple of days, it is less difficult and less expensive if the car has sport chrono as they don't have to wire in the switch - "Sport" doubles up as the "loud" button for PSE. I don't miss the Bose that much - at least, not since retrofitting PSE Smiley

Great pics of the RS60 - I love the red leather with GT silver, looks terrific, although SWMBO is not so struck on the carrera red leather.

Again, good luck with finding the right car - once you get it you are not a million miles away so maybe we could meet up at a mutually convenient location. Smiley

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

Thanks Dreamcar... A meet would be great - are there any Rennteam meets in SE England?

The pics were taken on my iPhone and the RS60 colour combo actually looks fantastic in real life - it stood out dramatically amongst 2 GT3s when I arrived at the OPC, and I was very surprised when the sales lady said "that's the car you'll be taking with you this morning"!

As for SWMBO - I'm currently single, so will only date the Cinderella who likes the seats I like... ;-)

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

Thanks for the interesting report boytronic Smiley I hope you can find the right car. It seems to be a good time right now for picking up heavily depreciating Porsches right now....

There's a few of us - kinrara lives in Chichester, RichC north of Andover, CharlesL in Petersfield, wtsnet lives in Bath but quite often comes over for a meet, myself in New Forest  and a few others (apologies for not mentioning Smiley) Theres a post on the 997 Board when a crowd of us got together in the pouring rain last autumn, got lost in a car park Smiley  and had a great lunch near Chichester). Easyrider lives in East end of London and has been down also, but now he's a Moderator he's probably too important to mix with the Great Unwashed Smiley

    Thanks guys...

Easy - OPC prices still sem to be strong regardless of the ecomony... However I have never before had 4 sales people contacting me regularly, pretty much fighting for my custom!

Dreamcar - I'll keep an eye out for events. I think I work near Easy in Canary Wharf!

Well if all else fails we can always meet up at The Goodwood Festival of Speed 3rd - 5th July - kinrara and myself will definitely be there at least one day...Smiley

Dreamcar - I'll be at Goodwood on the Saturday or Sunday in my mates "Holy Grale" (Evo 1) which is currently undergoing complete restoration and respray! Keep an eye out for the best looking Red one there... :-)

    Boytronic:

Nice write-up on the RS60, and there is no better way upon deciding your options than actually trying them out as you did.    When reading these forums, people are polarized regarding certain options, making it difficult to decide.   In the end, if possible, it's always best to take a test-drive.    I am sure that your '09 is going to be amazing, and am looking forward to your sharing your ownership experience.

Because my budget is £35k and that was £40k+ with just 1k miles on the clock.

They are looking for a suitable car for me right now though and I hope to post pics on here in about 6 weeks time!

    :)

Re: 24 hours in an RS60

One thing always puzzled me - when the RS60 was launched - it was heavily marketed in the GT Silver/Carrera Red colour combination - obviously because Carrera Red was a new colour - but how come so few people talked about the GT Silver/Cocoa colour combination that the RS60 was also available in?

AFAIK these were the 2 colour combinations that the RS60 could be ordered in....

     not cocoa; natural gray.

No KMM. The GT Silver/Cocoa colour combination was available.

Far be it for me as an 'umble Rennteamer to disagree with Someone Important but I was also under the impression that the only two interior colours available with the RS60 were carrera red and natural grey Smiley

My mistake DC - for some reason I had a strong recollection that GT Silver/Cocoa was available - when clearly it isn't.

    BTW, why the sarcasm?

Wasn't that the colour combo of one of the 986 special editions? I still love cocoa. I don't know why there aren't more examples around! I have to agree with DC's SHMBO, that the the red is just a little much to live with long-term.

LOL although I washed the car I never looked at the tyre brand!

As for colour combos, I've only ever seen 1 RS60 with the dark (natural) grey interior and it looked lovely... West London are looking for a RS or Sport Edition for me at the mo, though I have specified I want a "non-ginger" roof on the RS, following nasty comments from friends!
