Four cylinder Boxster coming in 2011

The next Porsche Boxster will feature a four-cylinder engine for the first time, Stuttgart insiders have said.

Few details are known about the entry-level Boxster, but it is “the most economical Porsche ever” according to company sources.

Porsche’s most economical models are currently the 2.7-litre Boxster and Cayman, which emits 222g/km of CO2.

The turbocharged engine is likely to offer just over 200bhp, and next Boxster is expected to be significantly lighter than its predecessor.

Expect this entry-level model in 2011.

For marketing purposes, I like better the idea of creating another model name that uses the Boxster/Cayman chassis as its basis.

I agree with you. A lighter, more minimal and less expensive car, like a modern day 914.

Re: Four cylinder Boxster coming in 2011

How about a modern interpretation of the 356, as suggested by the original "rumors?"

In any case, dropping weight from the current Boxster/Cayman chassis will result in a different feel and handling characteristic. I'm envisioning a Lotus Elise competitor. Some will like it, but some Porsche faithful will not.

Those points said, I'm having a hard time biting on any idea offered by the auto industry. Whether it's a "Chevy Volt" by GM, a four-door saloon by Tesla, or a four-cylinder Boxster/356/914, many of these companies with "new" ideas may be just lucky to survive until next year, let alone 2011. Even Toyota has lousy fundamentals right now. Also, who knows what will be the economic environment that shapes the tastes of customers and auto industry even two years from now. Paying up for alternative energies or scaling down on power using conventional technologies will be difficult for customers to justify if the cost of a barrel of oil falls much lower than where it is today. Also, laws that limit emissions and lower companies' bottom line (short-term or long-term) will be harder to enact in a financial climate where the economy struggles as it is. ...Anyway, this is all another topic, that is related only in that emissions and energy costs are probably what's driving the thought of a 4-cylinder Porsche.

Maybe they would use Audi's 2.0 TFSI engine (updated ofcourse). Light, RWD, mid engine should be nice car to drive. Maybe it will share chassis with Audi R4 (od R3?).

Re: Four cylinder Boxster coming in 2011

I would agree that I would prefer a new line of 4 cylinder cars dubbed 914 or 356, keeping the Boxster line as all 6-cylinder, but that won't solve Porsche's problems in meeting ever-increasing emission requirements.   I am ever hopeful that Porsche will utilize this outstanding platform for other technologies such as hybrid or all electric technology.    However, we all know that Porsche usually reserves their vanguard technology for the 911, even though as in this instance, it would be far more logical on the 987 platform.

In the meantime, I am thoroughly enjoying my old-school 2008 987S technology with a manual shifter and some great sounds coming from the mid-portion of the car.

...Ditto that thought! It's true that the current iteration of the Boxster incorporates technology that has been widely available for the last ten years. Though every time I go for a ride in my car, I feel very much alive in it, with it's raspy engine note, dynamic chassis, and smooth six-speed shifter. I'm sure I'll also enjoy what will be leading edge technology five to ten years from now (with whatever powerplant that's favored), but the thought doesn't deter me from enjoying what's available at the present. There's no doubt in my mind that air-cooled 911 owners from the 1970's thru 1990's enjoyed their cars as much as we enjoy ours today.

Personally I think the turbo 4 cylinder will be offered on the base Boxster, as the price leader.  The Boxster is also a perfect candidate for an all electric or hyrbrid powerplant.   Imagine the space available in the engine compartment and trunk area, without even touching the trunk compartment in the front.   Of course, I would need to buy a recording of the PSE to listen to.
