Rear Wiper?

Just spec my 997TT today with my dealer and realised that the rear wiper is an option (I-number 425), although at no charge. Wasn't the rear wiper there all these generations? Is there an advantage *not* having the rear wiper this time around? Mine is a right-hand drive car but the blade is positioned as if it is left-hand drive.

Just thought it was strange.

No.
Some people think it look cleaner without the wiper and it doesn't have water coming anywhere to clean the window when it is dirty (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I can think of one huge advantage of not having it--without it, you never have to worry about an [censored] at the dealer lifting the wiper arm up (to clean the back glass) and allowing it to fall down, which puts a nasty scratch in your paint because the wiper blade pivots far enough that the corner of it hits the painted framing around the back glass. Worse design ever.

I had the scratch fixed twice, no joke. They did it the first time, and had it repainted. While cleaning the car up after the repaint, they did the exact same thing and scratched the car again.

I always orderd a rear wiper just to have the button of my 996 filled note that it rains here once or twice a year only
but I didnt order that on my 997

The rear wiper was standard on North American 996 Turbos. About a year ago I raised the wiper to clean the rear window and accidentally bumped the wiper arm - it popped down and pivoted, putting a deep scratch in the paint. I removed the wiper as soon as I could.

There is a company here that sells a plug (painted to match your car) that seals the hole once the wiper is removed.

I would say avoid it. Extra electrics and possible moisture entry.

Get the rear wiper, it is a iconic Porsche visual cue.

It can rain like crazy in HK so you will get the chance to use it.

The back glass angle is very horizontal, the wiper helps but is not necessary, unlike in an SUV where the glass is horizontal and a wiper is absolutely necessary.

I think the 997 Turbo wiper is installed through the rear glass versus through the body panel like on the 996 Turbo. The hole in the glass may be hard to plug if you later decide to remove the wiper.

I think it ruins the lines on the 997. Currently have an S with no wiper and experience no probs in the wet. Have ordered my 997TT also with no wiper.

You don't need a rear wiper except perhaps to clear standing water when you first get into the car. You definitely don't need it when driving. And the absence of a washer makes even less of a case for it.

IMHO, you don't need a rear wiper. I was at the office this morning and when I went out to go home there had been a light snow fall, approx 1cm

. I started the car and turned on the rear defrost, it melted the 1 cm thick snow in about 2 minutes... once driving the wind stream cleared of the water

Not having it will make your car better, I saw a 997 s w/wipers at the dealer and i didn't find it was well integrated.
