    New England Winter Driving: C2s

Hello fellow New Englanders -- i've driving from NY to NH this weekend and the weather prediction is snow flurries. I have winter tires but haven't really tested my 997S in the snow. Should I be concerned? The temp will be in the 20s. I can take my winter beater but wanted to know if you guys drive your C2s in moderate snow or just light snow.

    Thanks!

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

do not worry! i've driven mine plenty of times in NE during winter storms with no problems. have fun!!

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

As anal as I am with my cars, I NEVER drive my toys in the snow and they also have limited rain use as well.

That's why I have a beater to drive in. I may have to get a new beater one day as it's up in mileage.

I can't say about the C2S as mine is still on order.

    Regards,
    Deanski

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

Look - you've got winter tires on it, so obviously you plan to drive it in the snow and that's just fine. To each his own. I say go for it. Just use common sense.

Common sense + PSM + winter tires = a great drive in your 911.

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

I agree with Silver Bullet. You have proper snow tires mounted, combined with PSM you'll be fine as far as traction.

What's the forecast for snowfall? Find out what the forecast is as far as inches of snow expected....the only thing that would deter me from making that trip--even with snow tires--is if New England is going to get dumped on with 6" or more snow. Ground clearance issue, you'll get the formation of those nasty 'clumps' byproducts of plows and other cars, those little (American)football-sized icebergs can be lethal to your lower front moulding/air dam.

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

Not to mention the other idiots that cannot drive or forgot how to drive in snow. Keep a good long distance if you can. I almost got wiped out from an SUV thinking he can pass anyone no matter what was on the road.

    Regards,
    Deanski

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

I think that Porsche owners who do not drive their cars every day under any weather conditions are babying a toy and missing enjoying their car. To each his own.

    Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

If Porsche runs driving schools in the Arctic Circle (Boxster, Caymans and 911's) I can't for one second imagine why you would not drive it in US. You would have to be some kind of wussie NOT to drive it in the snow.

Get out there and drive the d*mn thing!

Re: Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

I bought mine to drive. Now I can understand taking care of the car but not driving it because of bad weather?

Re: Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

If you have any doubts about driving it in the snow, and you have snow tires mounted, do this: wait for a good snow, then find a large, unplowed parking lot. With PSM on and from a standing start, try to spin the car. I mean, crank the steering wheel and floor it.

Some guys buy garage queens, some guys buy daily drivers. I say it's just a car: drive and enjoy!

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

As long as it's got the winter tires on...stock tires equate to automatic suicide --- take it from me (I survived though)

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

The C2S is awesome on snow - pure fun! Been driving up and down the alps since I got my winter tires. No problem at all. When you want some fun, just switch off PSM...

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

GG..I live in upstate NY. Mounted four Conti. winter tires on turbo rims and have had no problems. Took the back roads to Lake Placid a few weeks ago. I was actually surprised on how well the car handled. As long as you don't drive irresponsively, you'll be fine. Enjoy the scenery!

Re: New England Winter Driving: C2s

There are only 3 reasons to not drive your 911 in the winter:

    (1) Accidents are more likely in winter than summer. If you want to keep your 911 in perfect driving condition, that might be a consideration. Nobody likes the idea of their dream car repaired from a fender bender.

    (2) You may want to protect ypur car from the crap that gets on the roads (salt, rocks) in the winter. This is the best reason from my perspective. Having said that, with a 3M clear coat on the front end, if you just wash the car frequently and keep it clean, the damage will probably be minimal.

    (3) Heavy snowfall with poor ground clearance. Just about any car is going to get in trouble in these conditions.

Poor handling on winter roads is just not an issue on a 911 with winter tires. Would AWD or FWD be a little more predictable and less likely to oversteer you off the road? Of course, but that's where common sense, restraint, and PSM come in.

Re: Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

if i had the winter tires i would not mind driving it everyday whatever the weather conditions are...
even with the summer setup i am taking risks just beceause i do not want to drive any other car

Re: Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

Summer set-up + snow or ice or even slush = suicide

Re: Arctic Circle Driving with Porsche

The only issue is ground clearance and salt if you have snow tires. There's a guy in this thread doing the Alps--very cool.

I bought my C2S to drive it.

    GG,

As I watched the weather/Blizzard roll in to the east coast this weekend I was thinking about this thread and your journey. Let us know how you made out.

    Hey Gang,

I decided to take the 'winter beater' to NH this weekend due to the weather forecast. I think I made the correct decision! I originally planned to drive home today, Sunday, but because of the snowfall i'm not returning
    until Monday.

    --happy playing in the snow!
