    Single mass flywheel for GT3

Has anyone driven both the clubsport (single mass flywheel) and the reg GT3 (dual mass flywheel)?

Are there any differences in the way the motor responds or spools up?
I am thinking about getting one.

    ANy thoughts?

Re: Single mass flywheel for GT3

Not a GT3 but an '03 996 as instructor to an intermediate driver at Road Atlanta. It was the most incredible improvement that I have seen on a car in terms of engine!

Go for the Club Sport, as I did. Very good engine response.

I have driven both varients of the Mk1 GT3, ClubSport and Comfort, and can confirm that the Single Mass fly wheel makes a great improvement to an engine that already loves to rev.

Throttle response is much improved across the entire rev range, the only down side, if you can call it that!, is a slightly uneven idle and a rattle from the clutch at low speed.

Hav'nt driven a Mk2 with the single mass flywheel but will report back when I have driven the RS!.

Where can I buy the single mass flywheel, and would I make any changes to the OBC?

Your OPC should be able to supply you with the parts. I think that you will also need to change the clutch and pressure plate. Think the OBC should be alright, has anyone else got any knowledge?

FYI. The MK2 GT3 has a dual mass flywheel in both Comfort and CS spec. It was only the MK1 that had a single mass flywheel on the CS.

"Where can I buy the single mass flywheel, and would I make any changes to the OBC?"

I got mine from www.evoms.com and don't know that any ECU changes are required. i rec'd some such changes as a result of the supercharger installed so don't know if the ECU changes would have been necessary absent the SC.

Re: Single mass flywheel for GT3

No ECU changes required at all. Speaking from my experience with a single mass flywheel on a BoxsterS, it is one of the best improvements you can make.

If you install a single mass flywheel, you get some substantial advantages but also one major disadvantage: a possible horrible clanking noise from the gearbox and not only during shifting. Some cars have it very loud, other not. The problem is: you never can control how loud the noise will be and for a daily driver, this is definetely not recommended.
Another thing: you loose your warranty and it might be a good idea to install a sport clutch system including an improved pressure plate too. Just in case...

Re: Single mass flywheel for GT3

    RC,

if it is the same one that is on the Clubsport or the GT3RS, that is built by Sachs for Porsche Motorsports, why would there be a warranty problem and wouldn't they have the same "noise" as you claim?
I had a single mass flywheel put onto my C2, and didnt notice any extra noise or clanking.

" had a single mass flywheel put onto my C2, and didnt notice any extra noise or clanking. "

mine does - primarily at idle. i've not heard it yet (later this week), but was told about it by the selling/installing dealer. i also had a sachs sport clutch put it in too though.

Re: Single mass flywheel for GT3

I just want to make it clear that the GT3 CS (Club Sport) 2004 has Single mass flyweel like the RS. I have the new GT3 CS myself (almost brand new white with PCCB). Very responsive engine and car handling.

I heard dozens(!) of cars with single mass flywheel and all of them made a more or less audible noise, especially at idle but also during driving especially in low rev regions.
Are you sure you had a single mass flywheel installed on your C2? A REAL single mass flywheel with lower weight?

Regarding warranty: any modification which isn't stock might void your warranty. Installing a single mass flywheel to the new GT3 ("third" series or Mark II as some call it ) definetely is a problem because Porsche doesn't offer a single mass flywheel for it, not even as a retrofit. Forget about Porsche Motorsport, Porsche is Porsche and Porsche Motorsport is Porsche Motorsport. Your warranty is provided to you by Porsche.

Neither the new GT3 nor the new GT3 CS have a single mass flywheel out of the factory. There is also no official retrofit kit available. Who told you that you have a single mass flywheel?
