Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

Cool! Does anybody know if Montana have unrestricted speed limits?

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

I don't believe they do - I read an article a few years ago saying that roads in Montana are guided by the following speed limit principle: "Whatever speed you are comfortable driving at."

Would be nice to have that in NY (well, not in the city but elsewhere)

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

It appears as though that was revoked and amended in 1999....75 is the daytime speed limit now

    True!!! And vice versa!

Incidentally, a question to you guys in the USA, would you feel comfortable with everyone driving those clapped pieces of junk you seeing going up and down the 405 or 101 going 100MPH plus talking on the cell and eating an enchilda and drinking a Corona?

Kinda difficult to do a 100MPH on the 405 with the congestion we have ... That's just plain old reckless driving. If I see someone doing something like that, I would be tempted to pick up my cell phone and dial 911 ...

Incidentally, people don't drive around here with open containers of alcohol on a regular basis. So I don't know where you're going there.

Was in LA last wk in PM rush hr in a rental Merc S600 going from BevHills to Laguna and found quite a few stretches of 405 South btwn LongBch and Nwpt and 73South from Nwpt to Laguna where flow was 80-90MPH+....on 73S my notable traveling companion cars were a 996TTS and a 612 moving at triple-digits .....amazing how effective toll roads are for clearing congestion and letting the big motors open up a bit..... ....73 is clearly LA's answer to SF's Germanic 280... ...my pals in NwptCoast who use 73 more freq than me assure me it's typically like 280....free-flowing w/fairly rational CHP enforcement....and the tolls incent the worker bees commuting to Nwpt/Lag corridor to find alternative fwy routes home to Riverside, etc....

My sense is very few high-end cars are used for 100+ mi drives outside major urban regions in US.....sure, guys will drive from BelAir to Laguna for a wkend at Montage, but most high-end guys would much rather fly to do LA to SF/LV...even if the I-5 was unlim speeds I suspect most high-end LA/SF guys would still fly rather than have to fight usual congestion pts and see lots of obese people in large SUVs at the inevitable restroom break.....

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

Early or late runs into my office i easily average 105 mph with sections over 120mph on the highway, it's 14 miles to the office and i can get there in 10 minutes (some sections have lights). I never thought cornering at 105 would be comfortable but it is.

Now if i leave in rush hour it's a 30 minute drive....

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

BTW there is a section up here in north california, off 280 near woodside where all the VC's and internet gang run their toys. I've seen CGT owned by Google gang and Monster CEO as well as Larry in numerous wild cars...

Of course, you can find stretches of the 405 that are open. During the PM, you were on the reverse commute direction. Most of the traffic is northbound 405 from Irvine going north.

Watch out on the 73! The CHP knows that if you can afford to drive on the toll road, you can pay for speeding tickets. And they know that this wide open road is very tempting to speed on. Avoid speeding on the downhills, because they're usually waiting at the bottom on the median. I know because I use to take this road every morning to Laguna Niguel from Newport Beach. And especially avoid speeding near the end of the month. Ya know, quotas.

By the way, if you like the 73, try the 241 also. It's a toll road, probably not as good as the 73 but similar.

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

    great thread~~

love the 73... concur with VKSF it is LA's 280-- and who doesn't love the 280???

i take my supermodel g-friend down to Laguna to a downright gezzelig Belgian restaurant that segues
into a very slamming breakbeat dance joint in the late(r) hours, then we just boogie right back up to BH for bed-time~~
the drive down and up is so fast and easy it got me thinking real estate in Laguna for a few weeks back in October, but i've sobered up now, thanks.

Apprec the heads-up on the 73 enfcmt, Alan ...sounds like 280...gotta know "local patterns".....but just like the Woodside crowd has a fun local fwy commute to office, the NwptCoast crowd also has a fun local fwy commute to the various tech cos in Irvine-Aliso Viejo, etc corridor

OT-Have you chkd out Montage in Laguna?....would argue it may be best resort in cont US...actually has great food&wine(a relatively unique phenom for LA) and numerous NwptCoast guys w/interesting cars seem to use it as their local cafeteria several times/wk....and resort seems to have "LA caliber" staffing talent....so gf may be optional....

AJ, just as in NYC, the term "model" and "supermodel" is merely a euphemistic moniker....as it is in LA/LV/every other playground in world.....

Call me a wussy, but I would feel okay (not great) up to 130-140mph if conditions looked perfect. Anything over that is really asking for trouble, IMHO. Something as simple as a bird strike, or a flat tire become deadly.

The car's "perfect" at 100mph. Fortunately I get to do that on the USA interstate highways now and then

    WUSSY!...........

Just kidding MMD... I too practice the same principle actually. 155mph was the first and so far last time i pushed it. 100mph seems to be a comfort cruising speed

MMD - If you crashed at any speed above 100 it is deadly /

Re: Top cruising speed for a 997S

I briefly hit 150mph (I think 250km/h) on quiet patch of unrestricted autobahn and car felt like a rock. You just *know* you can outbrake most people in front of you, which also helps the confidence level.

On motorways I find it hard to keep below 100 mph in sixth, which is why I ended up with a 90 Euro fine in France (sulk). Luckily I was trying *really* hard to keep the speed down otherwise I could have lost my licence.

Amazing car, overall. Just beginning to really get into it now.
