Because some US legislators don't care what your car looks like and made a law that it must clash annoyingly with brightly colored/lit yellow lifesaving devices.
One could assume in vain that there was an inkling of evidence that such fugly markers actually save lives or prevent accidents compared to the clear ones.

I'm not sure, but I thought the clear side markers with the white bulb looked better than the clears with the orange bulb.

OMG, lately I wake up earlier just to take the longer route to work, I can't wait to get out of meetings just so I can go for a 'quickie' at lunch, then take the long way home.

....can't say I've ever seen a US F w/this clear marker nonsense .....but then again, Euros seem stuck w/those silly front license plates, even on F's in MC (would think someone in old-money Euro would have figured out how to make appropriate donations to law enforcement charitable funds to not hassle law-abiding, aesthetically-fixated high-end car guys re: front plates/"exuberant" driving on empty twisties ) ....but, in CA, F's and 80%+ of P's don't have those fugly front plates.....

Be aware that there's a *silver-looking* bulb which ACTUALLY glows amber when illuminated (I can't tell from above threading if y'all understand this). It is used in this sidemarker application. Saw mention of it on a Boxster Board (PPBB)

ahem... the white bulbs are in your present amber markers. Just take out the amber bulbs from the clear markers (they come with the amber bulbs) and swap the bulbs. At least when you order from Bumperplugs.com the clears come with amber bulbs.
As for the original question (why clear markers), I personally do it for the 5 horsepower gain!

Not for me it wasn't. I couldn't get the clips to release properly. It took me awhile before I got them off. On my 996 they just popped off in two seconds.

As for installation, I found it very easy. After trying for 10 minutes to insert the screwdriver into the hole in the wheel well to release the clip, I gave up and simply pulled on each lens at the side facing the wheel and it simply snapped out! I have installed others for friends using the same methodology.

Absolutely correct,
Can anyone explain why the stock US amber markers come with clear bulbs, and the clear markers (at least from Bumperplugs) come with amber bulbs? It took me about 30 seconds per marker to make the change-on my 996TSCab-is it harder on the 997's? Is there some edict from Uncle Sam to put stock amber bulbs in the clear markers?
