New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

    Quote:
The Z4 M Roadster: Awe-Inspiring Performance in Every Respect.
Boasting BMW M's straight-six power unit, the Z4 M Roadster features a high-performance engine unparalleled in the roadster market: In 2005 this unique engine received the "Engine of the Year Award" acknowledged and highly respected the world over for the fifth time in a row, setting up a record never seen before. Through its high-speed concept and virtually optimum transmission ratios, this outstanding power unit generates enormous thrust and performance in all speed ranges. Its specifications alone are very impressive: six cylinders, 3,246 cc, 252 kW/343 hp at 7,900 rpm, 365 Newton-metres/269 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm, maximum engine speed 8,000 rpm.

Two other figures perhaps say even more about the engine's outstanding performance: Output per litre is 106 hp and the power-to-weight ratio is 4.1 kilos/hp. On the road this means acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, with the same short time of 5.0 seconds being required for intermediate acceleration in fourth gear from 80-120 km/h (50-75 mph). Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

Does anybody recognize the road in the background, is it Stelvio?

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

    Another shot of the road:

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

    Temm,

Nice pics. I wonder if/when Steve Dinan will mod the car with his supercharger package like he did on the Z3 M-Roadster from the 1990's?

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

It looks like the Stelvio to me....

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

I love it. Although, I wish it had the V8 that the new M3 will have (in 07 or 08). But this will do for the M roadster people that have been sweating their older M roadsters for a while.

    So does it to me.

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

looks sweet. really like the bulge on the hood and the quad exhausts....and the 343 HP. A Z4 I may actually want. Probably more sporting than the SLK55.

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

I just wish there were more to it than what it is. The full M3 engine (even the normal e46 m3 only has 330ish hp.. no 343)...the M roadster will get the revised body and lights and technology- however, quad exhaust and the different set up, and the front aero set up just seems to me not to be exactly enough. Maybe if they put gills on the side or made the roll bars out of metal instead of that plastic covering. However, I will take an Mz4 anyway I can get one... I have been waiting for it to come out since the Z4 arrived.

In Europe, it makes 343hp (333 in US). Partly due to SAE vs. DIN power ratings and partly due to more efficient exhaust in ROW.

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

Hi temm. is this an official statement and car presentation? I cant imagine that BMW leaves the power output of the Z4M engine unchanged at 343hp now that even a 130i has 265 hp. I'd rather say it gets upped to 380ish hopefully...

That motor is already very stressed (evidenced by many failures over the last 6 years). No way to get 380hp out of a 3.2L naturally aspirated I-6 and have it last...

They have discussed using the new M3's V8 with over 400hp in the "facelifted" version to appear after a few years...

Grant, that makes sense - but maybe they increase it to 3.4L. dont remember the internal engine dimensions, but perhaps it could be increased in stroke.
    cheers

If they increased the stroke and kept the revs as high or higher (necessary for 380hp), that would increase the piston speed and cause much more stress...

Of course, increasing the bore increases the weight of the pistons, so that won't work easily either. I think they're just about at the limit for that motor. I think V8 is the logical solution...

Ouch! That is terrible. The Z3M weighed over 3,000lbs and I could never understand how - they must TRY to make those little roadsters weigh as much as a proper sedan

What exactly is going into this little roadster to make it so heavy?

According to CAR magazine all the M3 enginefailures happended on the USA version of the M3 - for some reason.
Maybe it had a different setup than the european engine

But the reason could of course be americans driving a stick

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

Goodness me, and they dont even offer SMG !!!

let's go for a Wiesmann Roadster:

343 hp, SMG II an 1180 kg !!

Re: New BMW Z4 and Z4 M Roadster Unveiled

True and they only happened during 1 or 2 years of the m3 build, not the entire line. In the begining a lot of owners thought that it was the way in which us Americans break in our car however,we take just as much care in doing that as everyone else in the world. (after looking at the guy in hk that bought his M5 with just 100 miles on it or so and revving the hell out of it to 8000k rpm on a back road). Also, for the M3's with defective engines, bmw either replaced the entire engine for free and gave a loaneror the person got a new car. I personally own an 02' M3 and never had any issue out of the ordinary, aside from the typical bmw engine battery issue (for some reason my bmw never told me when it was low on juice until I was at a WAWA on a great weekend day and it ran out) and the occassional flat tire as a result of nails.
