    650hp Blue Devil

Is going into production as a 2008 model.

It will be shown at the Detroit Auto Show this January.
Basically its a supercharged version of the 505hp Z06,
wich already has a 0-100mph time of 8 seconds and a
    top speed of 198mph.

    Re: 650hp Blue Devil

Great news for enthusiasts! I was hoping they would build it.
Where did you get your info from Jim (or is it a secret source)?
    Any guess on pricing?

So if (as RC said earlier might be the case) the 997 Turbo is unveiled in Detroit instead of Geneva ( ), I would have more than one reason to visit Detroit. Of course, a Corvette with a blower wouldn't deter me from getting a 997 Turbo S.

My (somewhat informed) guess is between $90-100k - about the same as a well-optioned 997S...

I also expect carbon brakes and more liberal use of carbon-fibre body panels.

There is also talk that the "regular" Z06 will receive variable valve timing and 550hp, while the base C6 gets 6.2L, variable valve timing and 450hp - all around 2008.

    Re: 650hp Blue Devil

650hp and $90-100K would be incredible! It would be impressive at any price.

Not so long ago, a factory stock 650hp car was unheard of.

Do you guys think Porsche will react to this at all? Maybe with a more extreme GT2?

I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't. They're to concerned about themselves. As far as they're concerned, their biggest competitor is themselves

Damien, my "secret source" remains a secret, lol.
Grant, GM has made variable valve timing work with OHV engine designs. I think you will see it on many of the V6's
and V8s. But I dont know if it will be used one the Z06.

FWIW,I do know they are playing with a DOHC 7.5 Liter V8. What it might go into, if at all, is only a guess. But you know, Lutz is a car guy, and hes old enough to recall when Corvette almost went to a mid engine layout, maybe someone thinks its time for Corvette to think in a new direction for the C7.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't either.

Jim, I'm again starting to believe that you secretly work for GM.

    Re: 650hp Blue Devil

Damien, I can assure you that I do not work for GM.

    Re: 650hp Blue Devil

Yeah, I was just kidding. I'm sure you don't work for GM.
Wherever you get your information, please keep it coming. It makes for good discussion.

It's not that tricky to do variable valve timing on an OHV motor. In the late sixties I helped a friend install an aftermarket device called "Varicam" on a big block Chrevolet motor. As I recall it replaced the gear on the front of the camshaft and had some springs and such inside so that the valve timing would vary according to RPM. I don't think that device is available any longer (I think Panasonic is actually using that name for a video camera) but I'm sure GM could do something similar. In fact, I don't see why any of the current variable valve timing techniques used on OHC motors couldn't be adapted to work on an OHV design.

Seeing how the Turbo S will have at least 525 horsepower (probably over 550 in reality), I don't see why a GT2 wouldn't be able to put out 600 HP... 50 horsepower really aren't all that relevant at these sorts of numbers.

    Re: 650hp Blue Devil

Austalia's Holden ( GM subsidiary ) recently showed a concept car with a supercharged 6L 644 hp Corvette-based engine and chassis . A sneeky way to introduce this possible " Blue Devil " motor to the worldwide press, IMO, as the rumors have said the Blue Devil will be a supercharged 6L like the base C6 and not the 7L motor in the Z06.
