Porsche LMP2 at Laguna Seca - Qualifying

On the pole for today's ALMS race at Laguna Seca in LMP1 is a Zytec at 1.14.185 with the Porsche the fastest qualifier for LMP2 at 1.15.60 , 4.46 seconds ahead of the second place LMP2 car. In fact the Porsche qualified faster than the 2nd. Audi R8.....a good sign for the future

    Faster than the second R8!?
I know it's just wishful thinking, but I'd love to see this car become another giant-killer.

Re: Porsche LMP2 at Laguna Seca - Qualifying

Giant killer?! I think that Porsche has the greater reputation in racing although Audi has dominated over the last few years. But to be fair the ALMS has so many restrictions on the air intake and weight penalties that reduces the the R8 performance that we can not measure fairly. I know that Porsche is not giving it everything that it could either, at least wait till LeMans next year to see them pull all the stops out on this car.

RS Spyder Takes LMP2 Win at Laguna Seca

The Porsche LMP2 finished one lap down from the overall winning Zytek LMP1 and about 8 laps ahead of the 2nd place LMP2.

See the complete race results at the American Le Mans website:

Maassen, Luhr and their Porsche prototype lived up to the lofty expectations that accompanied the car to the Monterey Peninsula. The first race for Porsche's first factory prototype since 1998 couldn't have gone much better. Not only did it win in its first outing, but it also broke the track qualifying record for LMP2 cars in qualifying on Friday.

Re: RS Spyder Takes LMP2 Win at Laguna Seca

Historiclt they should race at le mans but they are not mentoning anything exept ALMS 2006 witch is weird maybe they wont race at le mans, anyway I expect them to pull all the stops at 12 h Sebring and go for the overall win, I mean they are just as fast as audi R8, and they are the only ones that finish long races anyway. as for Le mans I dont think they have a chance if R10 comes out

Re: RS Spyder Takes LMP2 Win at Laguna Seca

finally! now they just need a direct competitor for the C6R to shut those vette boys up

Re: RS Spyder Takes LMP2 Win at Laguna Seca

    thats porsche

Yes, a giant killer. I was thinking about Porsche's racing history when they were contending for overall wins with cars that were small and underpowered.

You're right, Audi has been dominating for years now and there seems to have been restrictions put on the R8s. I can't remember seeing an LMP2 looking at the possibility of an overall win, but that could change now. Just look at its dominant debut.

Re: Porsche LMP2 at Laguna Seca - Qualifying

The Porsche LMP2 had its fastest lap at 1:17.1 third fastest lap for LMP1! Only the Zytek and one Audi were faster ( Zytek 1:16.4/ Audi 1:16.6). Porsche clearly will race for overalls next year. There still is more speed to be had for our new baby.

Re: Porsche LMP2 at Laguna Seca - Qualifying

Remarkable achievement, especially the durability of the car!

The Audi R8 is in its very last year with a lot of restrictions that hinder performance. Nonetheless a great achievement by Porsche's racing division - curious how it will evolve next season!

Damian, I don't disagree with you about Porsche doing more with less. I just think that had Porsche raced over the last 5 years Audi would not have been as dominate. Porsche has all the wins in racing and Audi was the "new guy" in racing a few years back. So Audi is not the giant in my eyes. I do think Audi has done an unbelievable job in racing over the last few years. We all know Piech (forgive my spelling) asked Porsche to stand down so Audi could race. The last thing is the MG was faster a few years ago in qualifing but no reliability and they were LMP2.

As far as I understand, Porsche was heavily involved with the development of the R8, so in a way they have been as dominant as Audi...
