    Front License plates

    Hello,
For all you here in CA , do you really have to install the FRONT license plates , and if not how many times did you get " caught " and have to pay a fine, and how much was it ?
    Thanks for your replies.

    Re: Front License plates

Here in NY it is mandatory, I believe it is in California as well --- I've never been caught...I would gladly pay a ticket for a non-moving violation rather than drill holes into the bumper

    Re: Front License plates

Its not much maybe $50. I got a ticket for tinted windows a long time ago and it was $20.

If you get caught use heavy duty double sided 3M tape stick it on and go get it signed off and remove when done.

Drill UPWARD, not inward. You can screw, bolt, rivet all you want on the undersides of the center panel. The holes don't show.

    Re: Front License plates

Driving without in NYS since 1992. Been lucky( so far).

    Re: Front License plates

Maybe you can use a sticker instead of a real plate like I have (see pic below)?

    Re: Front License plates

how did you get it done ?
Can it be ordered trough the internet ?

    Thanks

    Re: Front License plates

Don't drill. I've been running without a front plate for years and have never been stopped. If you drill, then you will have to use bumper plugs if you do remove the front plate. Check this out, I got a speeding ticket once in a Boxster S without a front plate, and the cop could care less or didn't notice the plate missing. Worse case senario, if you get stopped and cited, just use double stick tape, put on the plate, pass inspection, then take it off again. What's a few bucks in a citation to someone who owns an $80,000-100,000+ Porsche?

    Re: Front License plates

    Thanks for the reply.
The issue is not the money, the issue is if I don't have plates in the front would it give the police more incentive to stop me !!!!

    Re: Front License plates

    Pabs1,

my local dealer put it on for me, no idea if you can order it online...

I don't think it does, in general. Most police are not attracted to our cars unless we are racing or doing something extremely unsafe (i.e, high speed lane changes in traffic, etc.) However, your chances of getting stopped on the freeway for that violation are substantially higher- the CHP have a different agenda and philosophy when it comes to writing tickets. When you are stopped, you WILL be given a ticket for anything and everything that may be illegal on your car. Local police are much more lenient when it comes to using their discretion on petty equipment violations.

I agree too. depends where you live where you drive etc.

No plate is just giving Cops an open invitation to stop you at anytime. Who needs that? Will probably happen when you can least tolerate the inconvenience.

    Re: Front License plates

Agree in CA, CHP is "different" than local PDs regarding tix and what they write/don't write. Have only been stopped twice by CHP without getting a ticket, but have had several PD stops and no ticket. What's the deal with the souped up Civics et al with the plate sitting on the dash? Do they get tix?

Driver attitude has a lot to do with getting a ticket as well.

    Re: Front License plates

Here in NY I have been stopped twice by the NYPD. The second time I got a $60 ticket. I live on Long Island and not been stopped by Nassau or Suffolk police. It seems like the NYPD like stopping Porsches. Only been in Queens and NYC twice with my 997S and was stopped both times.

    Re: Front License plates

I like that idea. I just tell them that I just had the bumper painted and that I will put it on tomorrow. My wife's Ml350 had that problem and the police gave her a stern warning. It is not worth it to drill holes to have an ugly plate up front. What does everyone think about clear bras? I am going to put one on my 997 when it arrives in January.

    Re: Front License plates

Stopped once in CA, a few months ago. Fix it ticket, $10. Stuck the plate on the front with double sided tape, went to the DMV who didnt even check the car and instead simply signed the ticket which I duly sent in with my petty fine. To those who say they only stop you if your doing something stupid or dangerous - bollocks. I was on 101 heading north after crossing the golden gate bridge, in heavy traffic travelling at the same speed as everyone else in the 6pm rush hour traffic, perfect weather etc. Cop said he pulled me over because I didnt have a front plate then went on to ask if I knew what speed I was doing etc - to which I replied the same as everyone else which was about 50mph.

As to local police departments - at least where I used to live in Marin County - bollocks again to any additional leniency. Actually found them to be more arrogant and annoying than the CHP (at least the CHP guy who stopped me was polite and respectfull).

Regardless, if you dont have a front plate they have the excuse to stop you and will use it. I wouldnt sweat it though, keep the plate in the trunk with some double sided tape on it and say it fell off and you were going to put it back on later....

Here in NC - no front plate required which is much better. Surprised at the no of cars without front plates actually.

    Re: Front License plates

I live in Marin and have yet to get a ticket for no plates. Then again, I know I will. Lots of people up here don't have front plates - not just Porsches. I think I will get my front plate put on during my next services, because I don't want to have my time wasted by a cop pulling me over. I go to the city alot, and stand a decent chance of cops wasting my time there too.

After a while, its easier to simply get a license plate. I'm not thrilled about the holes in the bumper, but what the hell .... maybe it will protect me in a crash ...

    Re: Front License plates

    Hello,
I debated about the clear bra and finally after 10 minutes at the dealer when I picked up the car, decided to have it installed,
The only thing is that I only had it installed on the front bumper , lights and bottom front ( where intakes are ) NOT on the hood , I know that is where chips occur but it forms an ugly line across the hood and on a Lapis Blue color it is quite noticeable.
So I would definetly go for the clear bra.

    Re: Front License plates

Umm, I had a souped up Civic in my younger, wasteful days and DID get ticketed twice by CHP and LAPD on different occasions.

Check your state's lic plate ords. (they're on the internet) Many only stipulate that the plate be vertical, clearly readable and fewer than 4 feet from the road. So you COULD put it in the windshield area but can't slant it.

It's going to depend on where you are and what type of officer sees you- Obviously the law is there, and it CAN be used to stop you! I would say in general, smaller police agencies are more prone to doling out tickets for petty equipment violations. It doesn't mean that a large agency traffic cop will look the other way or not pull you over for it.. I'm speaking in loose, general terms here. Everyone has their different experiences with police, some good, some bad. Also, the law in CA states that the license plate must be 'securely ATTACHED' to the vehicle, meaning a plate lodged on the dashboard would arguably be grounds for a detention and citation.

    Got one last year $86

My 2001 TT did not have a front plate and i had Escort laser shifters on the front of my Car. I got shot by a motorcycle cop using laser and he pulled me over. I was not speeding. He told me that they use the front plate as what they point their laser at and that my car did not register at all on his gun so he wrote me a ticket. I think it was my Escort Laser shifters doing their job. Regardless its not a moving violation, so its more like the cost of dinner so I was OK with it. The 997 Does not have a plate and does have Laser Shifters

Yeah, that's it. They also do the photo-ticketing thing from the front end. They also can see your highly reflectant plate as they drive toward you at night. Front plates seem here to stay. Some of you plateless guys should keep in mind once you put the plate on you stop seeing it. IOW, you get used to it fast and it's painless.
