    997 Demo

My dealer has an '05 demo with 3,750 km on it and is asking a reasonable price. Who wants a demo though. You can be that all 3750 km were driven hard, no break-in.

Yet it comes with a full warranty, and it is considerably cheaper than new.

What would you do? Any experience with 911 demos out there?

    Re: 997 Demo

    you know the answer ............

    Re: 997 Demo

    Has anyone bought/leased a demo?

How much did you get off the price?

They give you squat diddly off because sooner or later they know that mug will turn up and pay what they want , there that cocky now due to demand and the buyers need to cool it but thats never going to happen ..

Me I would tell them to keep the demos ..

Not to be rude, but thanks for stating the obvious. I don't think anyone would prefer a demo. The question is whether anyone out there has any real live experience (good or bad) with buying or leasing a demo. The reason it seems a legit question is that many folks (dealers included) say that a break-in is not recommended (the UK manual apparently does not advise re: break-in procedures). It's a 911 right - great "bullet-proof" car, as they say, and the demo in question has < 4,000 km on it. So perhaps the savings are worth it.

Sure I'd prefer a new 911, but my wife keeps reminding me how crazy it is to spend this kind of money on a depreciating asset (especially since this would be my second one). A demo already has some of the depreciation taken into consideration, and it's less money too.

    Re: 997 Demo

Get them to throw in an extended warranty. Can't go too wrong with that.

    Re: 997 Demo

Lease it for 3 years and then you can decide to keep it if it hasnt given you any major problems, or unload it if it has.
This way you can drive it without driving yourself crazy worrying about it.

PS I have a Midnight Blue 997S with 2500 miles that I would like to sell. Let me know if you are interested.

    SB,

    You should probably pass

    Re: 997 Demo

    SB,

I think the fact that your asking a bunch of strangers you've never met means you have a few doubts yourself...if that's the case you should probably avoid the demo.

    Re: 997 Demo

You will eventually be able to find lots of 05-06 997/S cars that are used. I bet the vast majority of them have been driven in a mostly responsible way. I.e.owners obeyed break in, got them serviced, didn't ream the cr*p out of them on a routine basis.

Say you find a non-demo with the same low mileage down the road, with same depreciation, you may have more choices for options/colors etc, it might be a better bet?

I think your dealer can do a nationwide used-porsche car search for you, right?

You got the cash and, compared to ordering a new car, the pre-owned market has got to be a BIG buyers market. I'm just guessing though.

    Re: 997 Demo

    All good points MMD.

At this point, there're not that many used 997's with low kilometrage available through a Porsche dealer search, but eBay and other sources reveal more.

You're all probably right, though I kind of like the idea of leasing it and walking away if it's nothing but trouble. Still - 3 years is a long time to be stuck with trouble.

So far, all the good advice is based on common snense (for which I'm grateful), but are there no positive stories about buying demos out there?

    Re: 997 Demo

Just to go against the flow here I'd say that it is worth considering the demo car but it all depends on how good a reputation your dealer has for aftercare service. The car will still have the balance of it's warranty and will have to go through the Porsche Approved Used Car scheme.

The most important considerations IMHO should be is the spec acceptable (i.e. not more than you would have chosen from new on cost grounds), is the physical condition of the car good (no stone chips, badly repainted panels etc), is there a good set of tyres on it (not unevenly worn on the shoulders from hard usage etc), is the price saving over new a worthwhile factor? If you can answer all of these questions positively then I'd say it has to be a contender. I know people are wary of demo cars but they are sold all the time and the vast majority suffer no more problems than any other car. If they did you'd find people searching out forums like this to let off steam on.

    Re: 997 Demo

Can't comment on 997, but for what it's worth, I bought a pre-registered 987S off the lot. The car had been a manager's vehicle at the OPC and had around 2000 miles when I testdrove and bought it this April. As far as I know it had never been used as a regular demo since I caught it the moment it was first published as being for sale, but I ran it through a short break in period anyway, for about 1000 miles.

I'm very pleased with the car. No faults or regrets. For all intends and purposes I consider it new and mine, and driven to suit me.

In terms of pricing, I got app. 2% "rebate".

    Re: 997 Demo

WOW! This is a very difficult problem. No facts about lifecycles of demo cars. On one hand Porsche engines are very tough and CAN take a beating. OTOH Porsche asks us to baby them for 2-0-0-0 miles!

Since nearly us$100K is involved, no wonder most car enthusiasts seem to walk away from Demos.

    Re: 997 Demo

So I went to have another look at the demo today, and what did I see? A beautiful black 997S in the Pre-Owned lot. So I took it for a glorious test drive and when I returned, the salesman told me that I should expect even more from the car in a few thousand Km. I asked why he said that since it already has 7,000 Km on it. He went on to explain that it had a brand new engine just put in, so the 7,000km were not on the engine I just drove. Naturally, I asked why, and he said that while the car was in the shop for a rattling catalytic convertor, a senior Porsche mechanic with a really good ear could hear that there was something wrong with the engine and ordered it replaced.

Shyah. And Richard Nixon is my mom.

But nonetheless, perhaps this is the best of the pre-owned world. Pre-owned price, but brand new engine.

    Thoughts?

    Re: 997 Demo

On selling on people could spot this if they check in the archives right then it'll be your turn to answer them on the engine change , imo it would rock the boat on a potential buyer its just maybe a bit off putting knowing the fitment was'nt completed by the factory ..

    Re: 997 Demo

Anyone out there had their engine replaced? Anyone know what the issues might be?

Throt - always love your posts, but a little punctuation would make them a little easier to decipher.

Have you seen throt's new avatar? Now, just how likely is it that he would spot the odd missing period, comma, typo or even completely omitted words with that much hair in front of his eyes?

If you can still remember that detail, then it can't have been much of a party.

I had to go through that experience last year on my 10 month old BMW E60 530d. The throttle assembly collapsed and was sucked through the engine and apparently that isn't too good for them A replacement engine was fitted under warranty and all I had to do was run it in again for the first 1000 miles or so. I had no further problems and sold the car to a BMW dealer back in April this year after putting around 6000 trouble free miles on the new engine. The fact that it had had a replacement engine fitted made no difference whatsoever to the resale value. As a matter of fact, the dealer actually sold my car 2 and a half hours after I dropped it off with them which I thought was pretty fast work. Wish I'd had a chance to deal with the new buyer direct as he paid the dealer Pounds4k more than I received from them

    Re: 997 Demo

    Throt: one word: Wonderful.

ISUK: Thanks for sharing that. Certainly, after driving the car in question, I can say that it seems perfect. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I find it hard to imagine what could go wrong with having the engine fitted at my dealer. I wonder if the rear main seal might be more likely to leak? All in all, it seems like a very interesting situation - pre-owned price, but NEW engine.

    Re: 997 Demo

A new engine has nothing to do with a RMS. At least that's what they told me.

    Cheers,

    jb
