I speced a 997S with every possible non-mutually exclusive, option (paint to sample, leather to sample, big carbon, etc). The "most" you could spend is around us$50K. Most guys spend around $10k to $15k. If you're spending more than $20K on an S you're crossing the line which separates conspicuous consumption from consumed by consumption. 
The not-in-your-face "plastic" interior parts look pretty good, so covering them in leather might never be noticed.

I don't think either has any additional stitching--I ordered the door finishers in leather on my Club Coupe but not the steering column. My rational was more tactile than anything else--with full leather interior the door finisher still is interior colored plastic and the rest of the door panel is leather. So I got the door finsihers in leather to complete the look and feel of leather.
On the steering column, I didn't get it in leather because it's not something I'm going to be touching other than while cleaning the interior. And the column is in interior color, so it doesn't stand out like the black column used to on the 996's.

I've just started to do an "imaginary spec" of my future C4S, and have decided to pass on the door finishers.. My reasoning is that the leather will be located next to the door pulls; an area that will get a lot of hand action--hands have long sharp fingernails, diamond rings (my wife), fancy metal bracelets of watches... You get my point. I'd rather have a color-matched plastic piece with a couple of scratches than a leather swatch with abrasion lines that can't be oiled away...

I hear you but I don't see how the door finisher area will be vunerable--if you look at the attached picture, the door finisher is the seamed area around the door pull. The door pull including where you insert your finger to pull, is painted silver. I suppose you could "nick" the door finisher leather too, but there's a lot more nick-able leather on the rest of the door panel that's at risk.

I hear you on the consumption thing. Then again, most of the options will be only noticed by people on a porsche forum only. I would still would love to see any pics anyone would have of either option.
