    Advice re Visit to Germany

I will be visiting Germany in late September (Sept 22-28 or so).l I must be in Hamburg on Sept 26 & 27th, and would like to do something exciting Porsche-wise while I'm in the country. What should I do? SHould I visit the factory in Leipzig? Is it open on Sundays? Can private track experiences be arranged? Does anyone have any good stories of similar visits to share?

i've never been to leipzig personally (only zuffenhausen), but maybe this will help:

You can rent Porsches from Avis at the Frankfurt Airport.

And if I see a green / yellow Polo shirt passing by at the speed of light in a red or black car, I'll know it' the crazy south african in it!!!

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

or you can check out www.eliterent.com for something more exquisite... and more powerful!!!

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

it's just 200 km's (approx 120 mls) to porsche zuffenhausen! but i'm not sure if factory tours in zuffenhausen are limited to clients collecting their cars. anyone knows?

regarding grant's rental tip with avis at FRA: that's right. minimum age is 25, with 3 years holding a drivers licence.

website is only available in german language, though
    AVIS

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

have you guys checked the prices at elite... something.

    A carrera S is 1.200 EUR for a day. A day !!!!

Rent the car for 70 days and it's the same cost as buying one. Ridiculous. What a rip off.

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

Mike, I once rented a few ferrari's from these guys www.special-cars.de
They are 300 KM from Frankfurt though, but always willing to deliver the cars at a fee. Cars are plenty even a F40 or if you want an ENZO, but must be pricey.
    Good luck, Thomas

They will speak English with you on the phone though if you call Avis' toll-free number and ask for the international dept. I paid $2,000 for a week with a brand new (<500 miles) 996 with all the options and insurance in 2001.

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is much closer to the region of Frankfurt than Leipzig, but I'd say the girls in Leipzig and Dresden are a bit more charming and entertaining. Just my humble opinion, the cities themselves are pretty nice as well.

Porsche and MB are located in Stuttgart, with a much higher rate of cuisine restaurants and tourist regions (Elsace, Lake Constance, Switzerland and Austria) around.

It really depends what you are looking for, this should be fairly individual!

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

damn, i made my vacation too short!! will never have the time to see all those places thanks for all the links to the car rentals! much appreciated! will let you know what i can get a hold of

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

You could try calling/emailing Porsche (travel.club@porsche.de) about spare seats or individually scheduled backstage events:

    http://www2.uk.porsche.com/isapi/english/gbr/news/travelclub/behindthescenes/backstage.asp

Enjoy Germany but remember that it's still holiday time and especially those weekend drivers with funky colored license plates (no offense to any board members) have sometimes a hard time telling that you're nearing with 250+ kmh when they decide to change signal-less into the fast lane right in front of you, at an exciting 120 kmh.

We'll be in Leipzig in Sep 917/18) for the driver training and just learned that a factory tour is included. Looking forward to it already

Look at it this way Amazon: Would you be happy to lend your personal 911 to a total stranger driving in a foreign country on unfamiliar roads, pay for its insurance and tires, even at 1200 Euro per day?

Re: Advice re Visit to Germany

    Fritz,

it's just funny that Avis can offer that car for much less. Actually all major car rentals used to have these cars in stock, Europcar and Sixt massively reduced those numbers!

In fact I was one of the lucky few to have a rental-911 here in Germany - for free!

See, another reason why they now have to charge Euro 1200 /day. Somebody has to pay for your damned freebie!

I think you will need an international drivers license, which you can obtain at a AAA office. Also, check with your insurance to make sure you have coverage there.
