Portimao with 992 Cup
As I still have a bit of time at hand due to my garden leave I couldn't miss the opportunity to drive a 992 Cup car with ABS and TC as used on the Nordschleife in Portimao. I love Portimao, next to Spa and the Ring, this is my favorite track which I have driven here in Europe. Loads of elevation, good mix between slow, technical and fast corners, blind crests, so quite challenging. I have driven it many times, last time before corona hit in 2020 but still I was a bit nervous to say the least when driving out in the Cup which I've only driven for a short time on the Nurburgring Kurzanbindung in September 2022. We also had a very good reference with Gabriele Piana with us who makes a living with racing, used to race in the Carrera Cup Germany, ADAC GT4 Cup, was part of AMG team for the 24hrs N'ring and so on.
What can I say, weather was perfect, not too hot, dry and only partly windy. With a bit of data recording I managed to reach 1.4919 with used tires, fastet lap that day was 1.445 with new tires by the pro. My perfect lap would have been 1.48 low so I was pretty happy. Biggest difference is trusting car in the very fast corners, getting a better rhythm and some fine tuning. My fitness helped a lot, I was capable to drive a whole Cup race in one go, 3 times strength training, twice HIIT and twice cardio a week helps.
The car itself is fantastic, very predictable, fantastic front axle, basically never understeers, brakes strong and relentless. I had to learn again how to rotate the car, in the beginning I turned in too early and therefore had problems when accelerating, meaning run out of track. You need to turn in late on the brakes, let the car rotate and then you can accelerate very hard with less steering lock. All in all a fantastic experiences.
Jorge Lorenzo, the 3 times MotoGP champ was also practicing as he will be starting in the Italian Carrera Cup this year. Nice chap, exchanged some words, and this is from me, a Valentino Rossi diehard!
As I don't know how to embed the Youtube video please check out the link, its 3 laps until I spun for those who have time to watch.
