    Mobil 1 vs Castrol TXT Softec

    Dealer gave me 2 Litres of Castrol TXT Softec 5w40 to top up the oil when running in. I'm glad of the freebie, but how does this compare with the omnipotent Mobil 1?

    My "gut" tells me all synthetics will have similar performance. But honestly, what possible benefit can there be to using anything other than what's already in the sump? Saving a little money? Personally, I'd stick with Mobil 1. The opportunity cost of not having to think about it is the cost of two quarts of oil. Minimal really.

    Well my OPC said Mobil 1 and nothing else when mine was delivered, so I think I'll be sticking with that. I'd use the Castrol for the lawn mower so it won't go to waste.

    Mobil 1 any day of the week....my car has mobil one stickers under the bonnet and I got a nice velco bag with a ltre of Mobil 1 when I colected.

    Being devil's advocate, isn't Mobil 1 as much of a marketing tie-in as it is a good oil? Does Porsche not get ANY cash from Mobil for recommending their oil? What makes Mobil 1 so much better?

    I don't think Mobil 1 necessarily IS any bettter. It might even be worse. But you'll never have an objective answer one way or the other, just marketing hype from the oil company's advertsing departments. My point is that Porsche recommends Mobil 1 every 20000 miles. And since the cost difference is negligible it's simply not worth wasting any mental energy on figuring out which synthetic is better. Just use Mobil 1 and know that's taken care of.

    I read somewhere that Castrol uses a non-synthetic base for their synthetics, while Mobil does.
