I used emery cloth and water. Start off with 80 grit to knock down the deep ridges. Rub against the grain. Keep moist. When flat move on to 180 grit. Keep rubbing. You will
feel it as the stainless steel becomes smoother. At this point it will begin to shine. Move on to 360 or 400 grit.
Rub some more. Its lookin pretty good now, but do not quit
just yet. Repeat with 600 and maybe 1000 grit. Then apply some fine metal polish and maybe some wax. Repeat waxing as needed. If you do a good job you can try the same technique
on the ORANGE PEEL PAINT.
I bought 1600 grit. I'll lrt you know how I make out.

I used Autosol and elbow grease about 2 months ago - thread I posted at the time is below. Haven't had to do it again yet. I use a wheel brush to remove the black deposits on the tips every time I wash the car, very easy and estimate it'll probably go another two months before I'll need to do it again.

They're stainless right?
Two ways to clean them.
One is to machine polish them. This is very difficult and nearly impossible with them on the because SS is very hard metal and very difficult to machine. You'd definitely need to "go thru the grits" to get results.
Luckily SS is "stainless" which is a cute way of saying chemical cleaning is all you can do to them. You use "polishes" which are really just chemical compounds which remove dirt and grime. More importantly they also remove the extremely superfical corrosion and replace it with a molecular layer of oxygen which prevents further corrosion. SS will seriously corrode if used in an oxygen poor environment, like underwater. But I diverge... all you need is a decent cleaner (called a polish) and a little bit of elbow grease. I'd use Windex or similar to get rid of surface dirt and follow with the polish to chemically remove the corrosion and replace protective oxygen layer.

Zoltan, did you remove the tips to have them chromed, if so what is involved? I noticed there is a hex-head bolt down there, but also looks like a weld too.
How did they possibly do it for only 15 Euro?

I've done it several ways, but easiest is with " 0000 " superfine steel wool pads to which you've applied a good metal polish ,like Flitz, from any hardware store and lots of elbow grease, then a final buffing . Touch ups when needed are very quick.

Sure, it's a matter of secs to remove the tips- just unscrew it.I thouht that it was more difficult too, but i was wrong.
It was so cheap cause i did the job at a small industry which is specialized chroming big items like bars for weight lifting etc- they didn't know that they were "porsche's" tips and so on. so it was a piece of cake for them
