    First at all: CONGRATS:

I'm happy to hear that our "sources" didn't let us down completely.

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

Can anyone please explain what this means ?
I only listen to music by way of FM/AM radio, some satelitte radio and CD's.

What is MP3 and how does it work ?

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

Stradale, mp3 is a compressed, digital music file format. Basically it's a small computer file that has almost the same level of fidelity as a CD. As RC mentioned in an earlier post, a regular audio CD may have 10-12 songs on it, but a CDR (which you create with the CD burner on your computer) can hold about 600MB of data, enough for about 100-150 mp3 files, each of which contains a song. Everyone is excited about this because you could make mp3 files of songs you like (called "ripping" if they are copied off a standard audio CD and made into mp3 files) and then burn a single CDR that had over 100 songs on one disc. And obviously if you lost the disc or scratched it you could just make another. So it gives you a lot of extra music and flexibility.

Just FYI, mp3 is the most common of the file formats supported by portable music players like the iPod, and the most common way of downloading music over the internet.

I hope this makes sense, if not maybe someone else can explain it more clearly.

    RC you are da' man!
My dealer, actually his assitant, told me that he didn't hear anything about that and he really really doubted it, only after MY06 models maybe or he would know, I told him that dealers are the last people to know these things he said not to get my hopes up... boy is he going to be surpirsed! funny ...

This is great news, mp3 compatibility is a step foward from the pre-history CD's... now if we could get a hard drive compatibility to store GB's of high quality ripped Mp3's

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

    Thanks a Lot mcdelaug!
The PC's I have at home were built by one of my IT guys and I know he included CD burning so that's a good thing. I'll just have to learn how to rip CDR's.
I guess the CD Changer that I ordered as an option is somewhat unnecessary.........Well maybe not. Does this mean that you could put 6 CD's each containing 100 + songs in the changer ?

Right Carlos : my dealer didn't know it
I had to test it myself with a CD-rom to show him
    And he was very surprised
Have a good day tomorrow Carlos

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

I wonder if my PCM starts "acting" up would Porsche replace it with the mp3 version?

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

    RC :
    Thanks for your congrats.
You deserve to be called RC007 from now.

Hey cartouche ! Can you tell us the s/w versions you have in your PCM ?

Press and hold "Main" and "Trip" buttons together... you'll see the software versions

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

Hey Cartouche! Glad to hear your car has arrived man

Not at all Stradale, having the CD-changer is still a good idea. The mp3 compatibility is for the PCM CD-rom player slot, I don't think it includes the CD-changer slots (I hope I'm wrong).
So you get 8 CD's worth of space in "one" CD-ROM of mp3's in the PCM slot, thats still not enough IMO and if you want to listen to a normal audio-CD you have to pull out the mp3 cd. So with the changer you get an additional 6 CD's of normal audio and that way you can keep regular favorites audio-CD's in the changer, and use the mp3 slot in the PCM for mp3 compilations of your latest songs.

To encode normal audio CD's into mp3 files, all you need is a software program. You load the audio-CD into your computer's CD-Rom and the program will take the songs from that CD and "rip" (convert/encode) them into mp3's. Then you simply burn them into a CR-ROM.

I have tons of mp3's in my CPU so what I plan to do is to burn into a rewritable-CD mp3 compilations and new stuff, and re-burn it over and over with changing compilations of song and albums.

Yeah, I talked to my dealer over here and got the same response. They don't anything about MP3 capability on the 997. Seems like the dealers are the last to know.

    Rami,
About Spa, I don't know yet, really.
I hate traffic jams and mass events (a bit antisocial, I guess...)
But I'll certainly drive a lot this WE... lonesome

Does somebody know if it is possible to enable the MP3 playing capability in older cars with a software upgrade? In other words: is the new hardware psychically different from the older ones?

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

    Got it! Thanks

btw : When are you going to post some pics of your car ?

I'm afraid I heard it is not possible but maybe Porsche just doesn't want to retrofit so many cars and they keep it at a low level. If a retrofit is possible, somebody will find out. Stay tuned.

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

Begin of April build 987S (no MP3 support of course). Software version: 04202JD1 / 3004

If other 997/987 PCM2 owners could also post their software versions we could see if there are "constant" improvements going on or if the software versions are all the same since the 2005 model year.

Press and hold "Main" and "Trip" buttons together to see the PCM software version.

    Re: MP3 : IT WORKS NOW !

    Thanks Cartouche...

    my s/w version is v1.0 (PCM - Software version:04202JD1/3004)

Does yours still say "s/w versions v1.0" at the top of the screen ?
