1. the MP3 file playing capability is related to the PCM system ONLY, it doesn't matter if your order the sound package, BOSE or whatever (no PCM = no MP3).
2. the CD changer does not play MP3 files.

I have clearly understood what you've written.
But I have the tendancy to be hopefull, and I thought deeply :"Perhaps it's just a miss, it will work with normal CD with BOSE"....
Now you bring me up all my hopes ....

Is this true for the Boxster?
I talked with my dealer today after he sent me an eMail that I would have to wait another four weeks till delivery. I asked him if it is true that PCM2 now offers MP3 capability. He answered that this is true for the cayenne PCM2 but not for the boxster (they will start changing it with the new modell year to be delivered september). Well now i am pretty confused! Can you help me with that, RC?

I hope you are right but got the opposite info from someone at weissach who is directly involved in development. That was my point. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

You don't have to be sorry, don't worry.
If your source is 100% accurate, of course it would be more credible than our source. I still hope that it is true but your claim has me started to worry a little bit.
I get a Boxster S around mid/end of June and we'll know for sure by then.

I took delivery of my car on 3rd March 2005 - that's why I Know it won't play MP3. I am just annoyed that less than 2 months after taking delivery of my car Porsche should upgrade the PCM. It is a brand new model, and already the equipment in it has been updated. Why was this not incorporated from production start?

If you are not up to replacing the head unit to one that plays MP3 CD's (Alpine, Eclipse and Pioneer in particular), just pick up a changer from them and have it professionally installed - it should run less than 500 with labor. Alpine's unit are fabulous (yes if you can't tell, I have an Alpine bias) :-D

But can you connect them directly to the MOST bus?
I didn't think you could.

You could - the dealer I deal with does custom work on Mercedes and Porsche, Mercedes' fiber-optic system, similar to MOST bus is extremely difficult to deal with it...and in typical Bose style, it intends to be proprietary..but there are workarounds. I do not know the details (as I do not do the actual work) but I do know it can be done. Check www.aidesign.com, they are incredible. It would be easier to replace the whole head unit, and re-wire the system...but that will prove costly.

on my new 2006 model, mp3 works like a charm i.e. shows title of the track & cd name. rnadom play modes with 165 songs- not quite as a iPod, but not bad at all. my dealer told me that ice-link wont work on the latest models due to fiberobtic interface in the PCM.
