Yes, the standard wheels are 1 of the many reasons on why I bought the car as well! Nothing else like it!

I desperately WANT to like them. BUT after seeing them for more than a year I still can't conjure any aesthetic enhancing relationship between those wheels and the rest of the car. They just look weird.
Funny since it seems, from my limited perspective, that new 2006 models are appearing in print media more frequently with Classic wheels.

Go for the Carrera Classics. Yes, their basic design is similar to outgoing 996 Carrera wheel-- both are five-spoke with lots of negative space, but the new CC 19's have much nicer 3-Dimensional modeling to them than the old 996 Carrera wheels.
The concave effect especially of the rear Classic wheel with the fat 295 tire is just pure sculpted beauty.
Like MMD, I too WANT TO like the 19" S wheels, but their design persists in impressing me as simply trying too hard.
Hopefully there is nothing too Freudian going on here, but my 997 obssession prior to placing 997S order culminated in actually couple times parking next to the P dealer for a solid 45-60 minutes to eat my lunch while studying a row of 997's to determine which color + wheel choice most complimentary to the car. Errr, I need to get a life!?

i vote for carrera S wheels, i am going gonna go after them in my 997 -non-s-
Just keep in mind that many 987 Boxster owners will go for carrera S wheels too......as optional
whereas carrera classics and sport design's are more rare to appear on 987 boxsters.....
just for the info i am mentioning this, that carrera S wheels might be seen more on 997S and boxsters too
nevertheless i take it the establish a new design age for 911...
classics are too much seen in 996's

I'm leaning towards Standard S wheels though.

I agonized over this when I ordered my car. I loved the standard "S" wheel, but I thought that I might want the classic. I even came close to changing my order, but my wife said "absolutely not, those wheels aren't nearly as cool as the ones you've got coming. Your wheels are hot, those are cliche'". She slapped me out of my trance (you know, when you stare at wheels on a car for so long that you start seeing flying 3-eyed chickens). So I listened to her. Then I decided that if I got the car and just HAD to have the classics, that I'd order a spare set so that I could switch between the two styles in my garage at my own whim. Now that I've got my S, with it's standard wheels, I have ZERO desire for the classics, and I'm glad I didn't waver. I've parked my car next to others on my dealer's lot with 19" classics, and now I see them as too safe, too dull, too traditionalist, too familiar, too overdone, just as my wife warned. GOOD LOOKING, YES, but a tired look, like American Racing Torque-Thrusts on a 60's muscle car. The standard wheel is more dynamic, exotic looking, and gives the car an edgier and fresher character. I envision an old stodgey man who walks into the sporting goods store wanting a pair of plain white Keds low-tops, because he's been stuck in that rut, in that shoe, for the last 70 years of his life, and anything different makes him grumble unintelligible gibberish and causes his brow to furrow. I liked the new S wheel the moment I laid eyes on them. But I understand that some will take awhile, if ever, to get comfortable with the departure from the norm.
By the way, do any gearheads around here notice that the spokes on the standard S wheel exactly resemble a CLUTCH FORK??

No Damian, your urges are perfectly normal. They're admirable in fact.
I just think of owning Porsches like owning fine art. Interactive Kinetic Sculpture to be exact. It's like going to an art museum, nobody tells you to get a life when you find yourself going to a particular sculpture all the time! I just think of them as works by Brancusi. (famous early 20th century "absrtact" sculptor)

I like the "industrial art" direction of the new S wheel, it screams mechanical design. What I can't stand is the "organic design" garbage on the newer Bangle Bimmers. Although the wheel on the new M6 looks like they're trying to turn things back around.

At first, I ordered Classis wheels, thought it would look great with PCCB, you'd get to see those disks even more (well, you would actually!

And then, I showed the wheels to close friends and family and after the usual endorsement:
Oh my god Fanch, you're so sad! I wish we had your problems!
I find out something interesting, I come from an engineering background and all my friends and relatives who are engineers or related to technology some way or another told me to go for the Carrera S wheels!
Two words came back: Strength and Technology, it seems that's what those wheels inspire.
Everybody loved the classic wheels too, but they're just too... Classic!
Got them on the S class, got them on the SL class, got them on the 996 (ok ok, not exactly the same but you get my point).
The Carrera S wheels are UNIQUE, well not quite actually Lambo Gallardo anyone
End of the day, mostly cosmetic really, but I ended up goint for Strength and technology rather than classicism and fluidity.

I rest my case!!.... The fact that masses of Porschephiles immediately adopted the "lobster fork" nickname instead of a far more accurate "clutch fork" nickname is ugly testimony to the pinky-out-tea-sipping-loafer-wearing-snooty-snoot- demographic buying Porsches!!! LOL!!!!
