Yeah get a Roadpilot, its smaller,neater,retains a better reception and most important of all their database is by far the most accurate.
If you want it hardwired ie plugged in all the time, an OPC will definitely do this for you. However it might be cheaper to get a car radio shop to do it for you for free if you buy the GPS detector off them.

Just bought a tomtom GPS satnav and installed it with the mobile and static camera sites which you can get from: http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads for free.

I considered a Origin B2 which fits well in a positionn in front of the gear lever and below the air con controls but went for the sat nav in the end as didnt have PCM.
You have to pay charges yearly on the Origin and it has laser detection so it depends what you want really.

The GPS "detectors" are useful for the purpose of disclosing locations of fixed speed traps. A radar detector can detect them just as well, with the exception of the SPECS and Truvelo systems (there are more, but you get the point), which don't operate using radar. Very useful in the UK and counties where speedtraps such as these are widespread, but not really useful in other countries. Your best bet is to install a laser jammer and a radar detector, since these other devices are on well-known locations and can hardly surprise you.

Sorry but in Belgium, France and Germany, the radar and laser detectors are totally illegal and severely repressed. The GPS detectors (or better said locators) for stationary radars are legal and usefull since these stationary radars are more and more numerous here.

The passive cameras are only in well known locations local to you. Also, as featured on Fifth Gear, the Tom Tom and similar PDA GPS devices, which you can download off the web for free, are no where near as comprehensive as the data used by the subscription Snooper and Origin databases. As with most things, you get what you pay for. I have a Snooper in my daily drive and Origin B2 in my Boxster and the Origin is superior in every respect. The database is far more up to date than Snooper - there is a Truvelo device in my village for 4 months now and it is STILL not on the Snooper database, but it is there on the Origin! The Snooper is bigger, bulkier and unreliable. The problem with laser detection is the beam of the laser is very narrow, and if it alerts you it is probably too late if you are over the speed limit. Radar has much more scatter, which can be picked up. If you want total piece of mind you need (an illegal) laser blocker, for which the Origin already has provision for attaching.

I never said that the GPS devices weren't useful. I meant to add that they would be invaluable when taking intercity trips on unfamiliar roads, but that seems obvious. The fact is that if I had to choose between a radar and a GPS detector, I would take the former. A fixed speedtrap is still a lot easier to detect and avoid than a hidden radar or laser speedtrap inside some unmarked van. Jammers may be illegal but I'd rather take my chances with the law than being clocked at 240 km/h on the highway.

This was a fixed installation carried out by a local firm of auto-electricians i've used for many years. Where they tapped the power source from I've no idea, I'm afraid.
