997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

Finally, I got to test drive the car I ordered!

It belongs to a friend and is one of those demo cars that were introduced last summer, black on black, with loads of goodies but mostly PCCB, -20mm sport chassis, sport chrono, etc etc etc.

First, let me point out that it took place in Paris and bois de Boulogne so no fast driving, but that was not my point, numerous test drives (the best being RC's) have proven that the 997S w/ sport susp. is just phenomenal in a sporty driving, a mini GT3 really.

My point was to test the car in daily driving, on paved roads, I gave it the harsh Paris treatment, I was going for every potholes on the roads!

    So why Love and Hate?

Well, to cut it short, LOVE because the car is simply awesome, pefect, very similar to the 996, and yet improved in all areas.
Believe it or not he car didn't feel harsher than my 996 C4 cab with M030 sport susp! Honestly, it's really fine.
We were three in the car, my friend in the back and the GF who confirmed that for her, the car is no more harder than my 996.
It turns on a dime! No body roll! Simply amazing!
Ron, I didn't think the clutch was too light, just like mine honestly.
Also, played around with the sport chrono button and must admit I didn't really feel a difference. Could be me though, one thing it did, is whenever I give some gas to match lower gear when downshifting, yes, the acceleretor pedal response is more "vigourous".
Noise is an awesome surprise, not on par with 996 PSE but way better than standard 996 exhaust.
Especially past 5000 rpm, the car has a sudden kick accpompagnated by a more high pitch noise, superb.
Easy to drive, interior much better, etc etc etc.
Anyway, back the -20 susp, mark my words, IT IS NOT AT ALL UNCOMFORTABLE!
Yes, it's hard, yes, you feel all the bumps on the streets and it might not be the ideal daily driver, but it's fine, really.

    Now, why HATE?
Well, nothing wrt to the car but to all the ignorant, dealers and journalists who have been saying that the setup is just totally inadapted to the open road.
One really ought to try it before saying anything.
I remember one of our Brit member who said it was no good, bc his dealer told him so, honestly, try the car, it's fantastic!
Bear in mind I have NOT driven a PASM car, but frankly, I don't find -20 susp. harder than my car own car, so it'll be fine for me.
I don't want my 997 to be too GTish.
To quote my friend, the 997 with those suspension is the real sport car!, the PASM option is for those who fancy a softer GTish ride.

Sorry about the poor picture, it was in a garage after the drive.

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

Took the cab then for a nice long drive to enjoy a fantastic weather, still a amazing car!

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

I told you all about this superb noise past 5000 rpm. Even without PSE.
Glad to know I'm not the only one to appreciate it !

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

    Interesting comments!
But now I will have even more trouble deceiding on the options as there is a new one to fully check out!!!!!

and still very beautiful. well, i just love the 996's clean look.

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

I can only emphasise what you report. Experienced absolutely the same. -20mm setup is similar to the 030 of the 996 Mk II's. 100 pct roadworthy. And love the look ofc.
Looking forward to receiving mine in May.

The - 20mm option. Before reading your comments I would not have considered it as I thaught PASM would be better, but I would of have it lowered , as I like the more 'racy' look.
I am used to rather harsh rides as my present has been lowered for better handling and better look.

What new one are you talking about Gnil?

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

Be careful Gnil, because PASM suspension are electonically adjustable, it is quite tricky to mess around with the ride height (cf RC's several posts on the matter).
It is much easier to play around with classis suspensions like the 997 standard suspensions or the -20 mm suspensions.

My best advice would be for you to test drive a 997S w/ sport chassis, it is unfortunately difficult to find testdrive cars with such a setup.

But trust me, if you like a harsh ride, you will like it, again, for me, it felt similar to my M030 996 cab.

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

Cool report fanch , glad you like the ride .

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

In the middle of may I am attending a Porsche driving day on the trac. I have been told there will be many different cars to drive. Hopefully I will be able to test the -20 mm.
Untill now it hasn' t been possible, only the PASM.

Doesn't Techart do this job? ( I would only have it done by some major aftermarket compagnie)

That's it. To hell with the break-in period. I'm going to go past 5000 rpm today and see what this is all about.

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

By the way, regarding the sport chrono button: it's really hard to feel all of the differences on a test drive. I've my car for almost 6 months and I still notice some new nuances that I definitely would not have picked up to first time I drove the car. For example, RC mentioned the exhuast note difference a couple of days ago. He's right about that. I noticed that the clutch seemed to be more biting than with sport mode off (although this could be in reaction to the more sensitive throttle). But definitely a more sport feel. For me, overall, the car seems to take on a different personality. The way I look at it, I would rather have sport mode on than off. I can't imagine not having this option. Anyways, enjoy the car when you get it, sounds like -20mm is the way to go. Too bad it's not available here in the US.

I am not so sure I could handle the -20m. That would be another -10mm lower than my PASM equipped 997S. I am finding that there are many driveways in which I already scrape the front black piece no matter how slow I go. I even when through a dip in the street the other day and front end scraped.

Re: 997 Sport susp. PCCB test drive FINALLY! Love & hate!

    Thanks for the report Francois!
I have tried the PASm but not the -20mm, won't be long now I guess. I was actaully hoping that it would be even stiffer than my RoWM030 of my 996 (18"wheels), we will see.

    Carlos,
It's similar in terms of harshness, if anything, actually stiffer yes, but not hugely so, I hope I make sense.
Please try yours and let me know!
At least 5 more long months for me! but 381 hp!

You'll like it, don't worry. Like fanch said: almost no body roll, very neutral behaviour (no understeer, mild oversteer with a surprise(!) sudden change into heavy oversteer, which can be tricky in the rain). Perfect handling in my opinion but to each his own I guess.

You sure are not the onlyones. I can only approve.
I did 1800km now and had this weekend a topless eargasm above 5500rpm. My mechanic said it's no problem anymore at this point to push the throttle a bit deeper...He did't have to say that twice....
