I always had a major itch for the GT3 and almost went for a GT3 RS (or 911 R) instead but now I went into a completely different direction and realized that I found my perfect weekend toy car. I just wish it would come from Porsche.

You did the right choice. As much as I admire the GT3 your choice with the R8 does feel refreshing and I believe Porsche has got some catch up to do.

RC:steelested:dont think they could put gt3 price above R though?
im warming to the wing now
I heard something about 5-7% more...
Do you mean 5-7% more than last gen GT3? or more than R?
R is costing more than a GT3RS now...

5-7% more than last GT3. They always make incremental performance and price increase. 5-7% more than R would be a Huge increase.

mind me asking why r8 over gt3?
thanks

Simple: I wanted a super sportscar like the Huracan but with better Autobahn performance and some fresh looks. I have owned basically every modern 911 model (first one was a 993 but I owned a 996 Carrera, 996 Carrera 4 Powerkit, 996 Turbo, 997 Carrera S, 997 Turbo, 991 Turbo S and now a 991 Carrera 4 Cabriolet) and I was kind of fed up with the look, especially the interior looks so outdated.
I actually wanted to get a used R8 V10 Plus (first generation) because yes, the engine is a treat and I just wanted to try something new. Luckily, I found an Audi dealer who made me a very good offer for the new R8, a car he had in stock as a test car for selected customers. Even now, that same dealer has tons of slightly used (under 3k km) R8 V10 Plus from the Audi Experience events, cars they give away at pretty attractive prices.
The engine sound is just divine, there aren't many cars on the market to top that. I get goosebumps when I drive this car. Also, I always wanted a Huracan but it was out of the question because of my social environment. Then, there is the R8 interior. This interior is looking so good, quality is top notch and, from an emotional point of view, two generations ahead of the 911 interior. I also love the gearbox, it shifts so fast and this car just feels like a super sportscar, something I always dreamt of.
Maybe I'm just too old and Porsche didn't put their "960" on the market in time for me...

steelested:great story
thanks for sharing
have you driven the 991.1 gt3 and does the 991.2 gt3 tickle you as it will be a manual??
unlike you i havent had the gt3 experience yet and really keen on it
I have driven the 991 GT3 on various occasions and even drove a GT3 RS from Stuttgart to Munich. No track experience in the GT3 RS though, only (a short one) in the GT3.
I like both a lot but actually wanted to get the 911 R. The lack of PDK and rear seats changed my mind. Which brings me to the 991.2 GT3: This car will be available with PDK as well, so the choice is yours. I would always get PDK but to each his own. I drive my R8 most of the time in manual Dynamic mode, it is so much fun to use the paddle shifters (well, the shifting process itself, not the shifters...they feel cheap and like plastic), shifting is so fast.
The GT3 is a completely different beast than the GTS, you cannot really compare these cars. From a driving experience point of view, you won't be disappointed.

Fast approaching tight corners and going down the gears in my GT3 is an orgasmic experience. Going around corners keeping her at around 4250 rpm and then accelerating out on to the straight up to its 9000rpm is whats this car is all about. Surely making the 991GT3/RS and 458's the Kings of emotion.
I love mine....

Throt - you need to keep those revs up in the corners - that's 2,000 rpm lower than where the torque comes in hard

I swear this car sounds like my Targa which is turbo. I hope I am wrong but the exhaust sound is a dead give away. This would make sense since it protects the 991.1 owners as being the last NA and provides the 991.2 a differentiation.
Speaking of my Targa, today a guy asked me if my car was a replica. He went on to say it is a great replica. I told him it was not and that Porsche brought it back. He said he hasn't seen many and was dubious this was the real deal..

Today an adolescent (15 or 16) girl called my R8 a Huracan, according to her, she loves cars since she is little and she knows them well. Must be related to Nick's guy... I have no Audi rings on my car, so I guess this got her a little bit confused, despite the R8 logo on the back of my car.

ADias:RC: I've been away for a while... you drive an R8 now?
R8 V10 Plus, new version (2nd generation). I still have my 991.1 C4 GTS Cab though, it isn't going anywhere.
