Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

I don't know if it was discussed earlier, but why has a tiptronic boxster bigger drag than manual one? (maybe different underbody panel?)

    Additonal central radiator.

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

Can you tell me where it is located on the car? Thanks.

    Thas

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

In the middle of the front bumper !!

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

You mean the air intake? Ok, sorry Till now i thought that the number of the air intakes depends on that the actual car is a Boxster S 3.2 or a standard Boxster 2.7

    Thas

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

You were right !! The 3.2 S has 3 frontal air intakes, the 2.7 has "only" 2. The central air intake comes only with the 3.2 S, so IMO, the extra cooler (normally mid mounted) for the Trip in a base 2.7 will get cooling from the (2) side frontal air intakes, IMO, no diff in Drag Coeff here.

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

There is a difference! That why i started this topic. Check out Porsche's website:

    Boxster 2.7 maunual 0.29
    Boxster 2.7 tiptronic 0.30 (!!!)

    Boxster S 3.2 manual 0.30
    Boxster S 3.2 tiptronic 0.31 (!!!)

So, the question is why the tiptronic transmission increases the drag?

    Thas

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

Hm, ok i think i understand now. On the S version with manual, the center intake is "empty", and with tiptronic, there is an extra cooler (0.30 vs 0.31), it's ok.

The 2.7 version is still confusing, becouse if the tiptronic's cooler uses the side intakes, the area of the intakes is the same, so where's the extra drag?

    Thas

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

    This sounds very strange.
Why would the tiptronic car need an extra cooler?
It's more likely something to do with the underbody...some extra panel or so that causes the extra drag.

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

Maybe you are right about the underbody Dr Phil, but I'm sure about the extra Trip Cooler, because it has already been mentioned on this board.

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

Ok, but again: Why would the trip tranny call for an extra cooler??
    Doesn't make sense IMO.

Fritz explained it for us very well a few of days ago if I recall. The Tiptronic hydrolic torque converter is not as mechanically efficient as the manual, there is more power loss from the engine to the wheels, and that power loss generates more heat, its is tranformed into heat, so need extra cooling. Just like the GT3 engine needs a third radiator becuase of the greated overall power it generates so proportionally it also generates more heat.

Thanks, Carlos! I didn't feel like having to cover that ground all over again so soon!

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

    Thanks Carlos
Strange with that much extra friction and heat.
Guess that makes it Manual 1 - Tiptronic 0

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

Perhaps it means "emotional" drag..realizing they have an automatic transmission. Just a thought

Hehehe...that would be a great yardstick for future measurements.
    0 - 100 in 2.3 seconds...emotionally
My Boxster has 400 emotional BHPs

Re: Drag coefficient - manual vs tiptronic

For the 987 with a tip Porsche did what they did to the 996 with a tip. Put a transmission cooler in the front of the car. The 986 did not need this because there is a cooler on the transmission and the power plant is reversed compared to a 996.

987 now has the cooler in the front of the car and it catches air.
