    System fault, Return To workshop.

    I washed my new 997 S with a 12/04 build date and immediately after starting the car, the "System Fault, Return To Workshop" is now on. The car has a whole 99 miles on it.

    I searched the archives and found a post from OSSI that says:

    " they need to replace the front latch solenoids/actuators (NOT ONLY the latch assembly) the original solenoids have leaky seals for most of the early production cars due to a bad lot of these solenoids."

    Does anyone know if replacing the above parts solves the problem? I called my closest dealer, who is 2 hours away, and they hadnt heard of this particular problem. I need to take my car to them, is it ok to drive it the 100 miles to their shop? My car also wouldnt qualify as an early production car would it?

    Is there anyone that has had this problem and had it permanently repaired?
    Doe you have the part numbers for the parts involved?

    I am also wondering if a pattern is developing for a specific time frame that the cars with this problem were built within.
    Would it be a good idea to start a dedicated thread for this issue that would track build dates and what it took to resolve the issue?

    You may be lucky in the fact that someone who got their car very early had to go back to the dealer numerous times before they were able to get it fixed. Your dealer should be able to fix it in one try. It might be a good idea to print out the one thread so that your dealer can replace the parts on the first try.

    MAKE SURE THEY KNOW SOMETHING!

    Make sure your Dealer/Service is smart, current, informed. Just because they sell Porsches (or should I say, take orders for them?) doesn't mean they have a totally knowledgeable service dept when it comes to these MAJOR FUs. Don't let them experiment on your car as they try to interpret the tech bulletin. No kidding: word to the wise.

    I just got the same message after I wash my car too. I will bring my car to my dealer in tommorrow. Did you ever got your car fixed.

    It's ridiculous, why isn't this a recall item?
    My 997S was delivered on Saturday. As soon as I switched on the car I got "System fault, return to workshop" 38 miles on the clock!!
    Needed the car jump started this morning to get it to a dealer (to recap..38 miles on the clock, no miles driven by me, system fault & dead battery)...fabulous initial product quality!! .....JD Powers, I'm waiting for your call

    Using this excellant forums' info, I printed out the relevant thread and gave it to the dealer. Sure enough it's the solenoid problem...The issue will be fixed in a couple of hours....Van 911, I'll send you an email with the relevant part no, info etc.
    I presume that Porsche manufactures using ISO or 6 sigma quality assurance (which means that they have parts traceability back to batch/source) So they know which cars are affected...
    FYI, Although I only just received the car (March 19th) it was built 12/04 (which seems to be the month when Porsche used these 'dodgy' switches)

    I'm belgian and dutchspeaking, My 997S cabrio will be delivered in 4 weeks from now...So i'm anxious to hear about the probs you're having.
    Can anyone explain in simple englisch what "solenoid" means?

    Solenoid is an electrical switch. When you apply a current to it, a magnetic field is created which moves a switch mechanism.

    I wish I knew how you got your solenoids replaced so quickly.
    My dealer said Atlanta is making them send a printout of the stored fault to them for evaluation before any parts would be released for my repairs. They then proceeded to tell me that the solenoids are on restriction.
    Please post the part numbers that they use to replace your solenoids. I will do the same when my car is done. That is ironic that you had a dead battery because the tech said I also had a dead battery code stored in my system, so apperantly mine was dead at one time before it was delivered to me.
    I am NOT happy, but I am trying to be patient. Hopefully I wont have any more issues after this is resolved. I just want to drive it!

    Ps my build date is also 12/04

    Problem sorted!!
    Beltar, you won't have a problem as your car has only just been manufactured, they've upgraded the seal on the switch....
    FYI
    The part is about the size of a matchbox, and the thickness of 2 matchboxes, it has about a 2ft long cable extending from it.

    Van 911, call 310 478 4095, ask for Mario in the service dept. I told him you may call, so he'll give you the part nos. etc. Just tell him it's the same issue as the Midnight Blue 997S he fixed today (21st March)
