Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Does anyone know if Porsche will ever return to Lemans with a leader? I am getting bored with Audi taking top honors, and yea the bentley boys are back, but so what. I need to see another Porsche Podium! Not satisfied with GT-2 or 3

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Two editorials in the March Panorama are predicting a return in 2006. In Michael Cotton's column he cited rumors overheard at Daytona of an LMP2 with the 3.6-liter and later an LMP1 version due for Le Mans in June 2006. Power for the LMP1 is unknown but the CGT's V-10 would seem to be the obvious choice. Both columns make a good case for a return in 2006.

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Only one easy way for Porsche to win: Get Tom Kristensen.

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

    It looks good for 2006.

    "Auto-Motor-Sport" 16.3.2005: Chief-aerodynamic from Audi-Sport (Audi R8) Michael Fadenhauer changes to Porsche/Weissach. We will see. :-))

    Agreed, good news, thanks.

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Good news. I was planning on attending my first Le Mans this year but if Porsche will be there next year, I will wait for them.

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Who cares anymore ? As if it's helped Audi sell cars in the US , whether they were Audi's or basically rebadged as Bentleys. As if anyone cared when Nissan, Mazda and MBZ competed for a few years. As if anyone in the US cared that Viper and Corvette battled it out there for a few years , when all their loyalists in the US care about is how to make them go faster at the drag strip. As if any Porsche buyer in the US can even name more than one driver or team in GT class there where it's a 911 parade.

Check out Porsche's history and philosophy and you will learn why racing is important...

As if being a 911 /Porsche fan for 35 years doesn't qualify me to know a little something of their racing history ? LeMans victoy rates NO newspaper or other media coverage in US other than a half page or so in Autoweek .

Sadly, in the US, Most Formula 1 results are barely published in local Bay Area papers , a hotbed of US sports car enthusiasm.
OTOH, American kids grow up idolizing the manufactured " racers " of NASCAR, where fans don't know the cars or makes or care . In fact, the broadcast races only refer to the car number as a way to identify the DRIVER, as the cars are for all intents and purposes, spec racer rolling billboards for beer and laundry detergent companies . It's about the STARS , and the cars don't matter.

ROW racing : drivers are interchangable. US racing : cars/manufacturers are interchangable . Try selling cars into that environment .

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Then you should know that selling cars is not the main reason Porsche fans want Porsche to get back to seriuos racing.
I know you are just venting out the fustration of current racing scene in US, if its like you say then its a pity (NASCAR...uggg!), but you have to realise that there is a whole world outside the US that is not.

Of course not . It's the reason I've heard that an entire generation of Porsche race engrs and their best prodigies have left to join other race teams in the past 8 years since there was no in house work in this era of exploding race/computerization knowledge . They didn't want to be left in the dark ages of early 90s technology . It will take a while to build back up the in house expertise and the translation of some of that to the production side . Ahh....the after effects of the peppermobile's drain on the company ...

You can say that again, and whats more, I'm not sure how this cross-breeding will affect Porsche's identity and philosophy in the engineering department

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

racing doesn't sell car like it used too. Unfortunate but true. Porsche guys like me just want them to be further involved in racing because we like to see them kick ass . Truth is that good looking cars and good advertisements sell Porsches more then winning some race many people haven't heard of (i.e. might be alarming to know some richy down the street from me who owns a Porsche hadn't even heard of LeMans!)

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

I hope they return. It seems like Porsche has been somewhat ignoring their roots by focusing less and less on racing and more on profit margins and selling the most cars.

I hope they return with an LMP as soon as possible and I hope they atleast have some competition unlike Audi and Bentley who have essentially fought eachother and are ownded by the same people.

I have been a Porsche fan for 36 years. Somehow, I do remember the Le Mans victories. Now it could be also that LeMans the movie came out at the same time and the Gulf stations had a big promotion in 1970-72? where either you got a poster or a paper 917 on the LeMans victories. Now I may be the exception, but discovered Porsche at 12, designed/built a radio control 917 at 14, bought my first new Porsche at 18, and then had my first serious spinout at 19 from one of the same 1970 LeMans Porsche 917.

The 911 got me interested in Porsche but their racing victories got me hooked. Or just maybe it was Porsche golden years of racing. What better rivalry than Porsche and Ferrari going all out?

Re: Will Porsche return to Lemans top?

Ahh, "Le Mans" with Steeve McQueen. What a movie, the racing movie, a must see movie for any P-car fan
