    I need a new clutch

I took the car in to the dealer because 1st and 2nd gear are notchy. In addition, when the car is cold, the first time i go into 4th the gear grinds. It only happens once when the car is cold.

Diagnosis: Per the service manager, a notchy 1st and 2nd gear is normal for a 997 but they think there is a problem with the clutch. NOTE: they only drove the car they did not take it apart. COST: $4500 approximately.

The car has about 2500 miles on it. I've been driving a manual for 15 years.....how could i destroy a clutch in 2500 miles? I said it must be defective and the service manager said he has never seen a defective porsche clutch.

They've got to be kidding! What is the worst that can happen if i just keep on driving the car without replacing the clutch??

Re: I need a new clutch

It should be replaced under warranty. Call PCNA directly and speak with some one there.

Re: I need a new clutch

    Thanks,

    How do i contact PCNA?

Re: I need a new clutch

Thats got to be something wrong with that clutch! thats riduculous.

Sadly they will refer you back to the dealer. I suggest you first find out what is wrong before going into attach mode. Have them check the clutch and confirm what the issue is. If they say it is a clutch problem and needs to replaced on YOUR nickel and you disagree, asked for the Reg, Service rep to get involved.

Typically a dealer sides with the driver on early clutch problems. Your dealer apparently is adopting the Porsche corporate philosophy that the customer be damned.

Re: I need a new clutch

Checking out the clutch involves dropping the tranny and its maybe a minimun of $800 just in labor work, thats probably why the havent taken it appart. Like vtrader well said, contact your local PCNA rep if the dealer is being an a$$.

Re: I need a new clutch

I didn't even have to call PCNA. The service manager called me back and said they would replace the clutch, out of good will, one time only. He said if it happens again I will have to pay for the clutch replacement.

This is so perplexing. I've been driving a manual for over 15 years and NEVER needed to have a clutch replaced. Again, he said the fact that 1st and 2nd gear is really notchy is normal -- really strange.

Well, i'm glad Porsche came through on this. I didn't even have to raise heck!

Re: I need a new clutch

That was the logical course of action. Glad to hear that

Re: I need a new clutch

The dealer installed a new clutch and guess what? The car drives like a dream. It feels 10 times better than when i first picked up the car. It feels like a different car. I can pull off in first gear with such ease! The clutch must have been defective or installed improperly from the factory. I feel like i now own a porsche!

I know y'all won't believe me....but it truly is a totally different car.

That's just plain wrong ! My 997 is NOT notchy from first into second, and I'm sure other readers can attest to the same. Occasionally in a stick you might get a little notchy dropping from second into first, but I've never experienced it the other way around.

I find it hard to believe their position that it's a clutch problem (I too have driven stick for 20 years). While I'm not a mechanic, it sounds more like an adjustment in the gear linkage or a synchro problem. Since you're not paying, it may be a moot point but I wonder are they *really* replacing the clutch ?

    That great to hear!

BTW, is the notchiness of 1st/2nd also gone?

    Carlos,

1st gear is no longer notchy but it is notchy going from 1st into 2nd though.

Why does the 997 clutch feel so light compared to 996/986

Driving the 997 and also the 987 I noticed that the clutch required a lot less pressure than my 2003 986 S.

Did the dealer's tech make any mention of the possibility that the problem might have been caused by air bubbles trapped in the clutch hydraulic circuit?

I've experienced this problem causing the symptoms you describe, and bleeding the clutch circuit would have been a lot cheaper than replacing the clutch.

Re: I need a new clutch

    @GG
And when it's cold? 1st and 2nd still notchy?

Re: I need a new clutch

I had the EXACT same problem. It would grind into 4th ONCE and then never do it again. They tried adjusting my shifter linkages and then replaced my entire transmission.
