    Difference in width of front vs. rear

    I had an interesting conversation today with a friend who has a 996 turbo. He warned me that when i get my 997, that I should be careful when taking tight corners.

    Apparently, he blew a tyre as he judged the front correctly but forgot that the rear was wider. When he went to the dealer, they told him this is not so uncommon.

    So how much wider is the front than the back? Obviously more interested in a 997 as thats what I have on order. And how many of you have clipped the rear wheels by mistake in this way?

    997 Track 58.5 (1,486 mm) front, 60.39 in. (1,534 mm) rear. 997S Track 58.5 in. (1,486 mm)front, 59.59 in. (1516 mm) rear. So, a non-S is 1.89 in (48 mm) wider in the rear (rear protrudes .95 in (24 mm) more on each side). Cutting it pretty close if an inch more width causes you to hit things. In an S it is a total of 1.09 wider track in the rear (or sticks out .55 in. more each side than front).

    So a 997S is narrower in the rear than a 997...How come?

    I don't know. The numbers are right off the 997 brochure. I'm sure everything else is the same between the non-S and S cars, so I am assuming it is the wheels making the difference. Must be a different offset on the S wheel verses the non-S wheel (especially since the S has rear wheels that are one inch wider than the non-S).

    Yeah this is why i drive into my garage rather than reverse in as i would normally do

    have in mind that the rear look wider than it is because the cockpit get narrower at the back thus making the illussion that the back flares are fatter than they actually are.

    I don't think you should look at the track width. This is depended on the width of the tires. The overall width of non S and S are the same.

    Yes the S and non-S may have the same overall width, but the original question had to do with hitting the rear tire/wheel on something. That is not an overall width issue, it is an issue of how far out the tire/wheel protrudes (track).

    in my opinion that not something that could easily be done , i mean it also depends on how the driver perceives his cars dimensions
