    Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

Autovelocity (www.autovelocityinc.com) has CF-Mag wheels that are incredibly light. The 18x10.5" wheels are claimed to be double the strength of the stock Corvette Z06 wheels and only weigh 8 lbs/ea (forthcoming hollow titanium spoke version claimed to weigh 5.5 lbs). Price is $1.5k/ea for barrel and $200-$1,500/ea for the center section - can be custom ordered in any size and color.

Any kamikaze pilots out there ready to test these wheels?

They claim that they survived 5 million impact cyle tests better than any alloy wheels...

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

Has anybody in competition used such a type of wheel construction? I would guess they'd be the first to invent and develop them if they'd work?
Anyhow, very interesting to say the least...

Yes, if they survive the stresses of racing, then I would feel pretty confident of their strength. Many racing classes' rules probably prohibit their use, but maybe some types of racing would allow them? By using these and some PCCB-type brake rotors, one could really reduce this source of rotating and unsprung mass alot - this weight reduction is by far the most beneficial to acceleration, braking, and handling (significant improvement to lap times).

Of course, a wheel failure at high speed is beyond dangerous...

At the risk of sounding like a party pooper, I didn't find the "quality" of this company's web site to be very convincing.
Who are they? What do they actually do? Are they based in Tulsa, OK, USA, or is there a Tulsa OK on Taiwan? Do Taiwanese companies have product liability insurance?

    I'll stop now. I sound too much like a p. p..

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

Fritz - yeah, their website is crap, but the owner has published some seemingly credible reports on Lotus Elise, Honda NSX, and Ferrari websites. Yes, they are US-based (don't know if that's a good thing or not in your book )

Well, it beats Taiwan! Just kidding!

It's just that the content and syntax of the web site text seemed far removed from Oklahoma.

    Thanks for the links.

Yet another thing that makes me want to smack myself...why hasnt anyone thought of this before??? Like that tweel thingy...

Or how about a carbon fiber tweel!! JK

In bikes the advantage of the lower weight should much more noticeable than in a cars, not only because of the decrease unsprung weight and the suspension, but because since bikes turn by tilting into the curve, and the heavier the wheel the more resistance it offers to tilting, since the wheel is spinning it has a tendency to stand upright and avoid tilting, so the lighter the wheel, the more agile the bike becomes in the bends because there is less resistance of the wheel to stay upright due to the spinning. So its interesting, what do the MotoGP bikes use?

What do they use? Magnesium? Titanium?

    Anybody out there who knows?

I always thought they were Forged and Magnesuim but now I'm not sure

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

There is a Dutch manufacturer that has had TUV approval of their carbon fiber truck wheels for the past year or so. It will be interesting to see if the autovelocity wheels are as durable.

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

in Moto GP they use magnesium forged wheel, because the carbon is too stiff. Difficult to imagine that, but a magnesium or alu. alloy wheel has some deformations.
After 2 or 3 hours of use, they replace the wheels.

Jecey - Why is it bad to be stiff? Is it a safety or a performance issue?

I'm guessing that Jecey, when describing carbon composite as being "stiff", is referring to its "brittle" character. Carbon composites tend to break up under high impact forces, instead of deforming as many metals and alloys would. Carbon composites do tend to absorb a lot of energy before breaking up, especially in relation to their weight.

I suspect that, whereas a metal wheel which deforms under extreme loads might still tend to retain air, a wheel which shatters would not maintain pressure, and would thus allow the tire to collapse suddenly.

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

I know Dymag in the UK has bike wheels in Carbon.

ALMS & the FIA GT series for cars specifically prohibit carbon wheels (not sure who else does though).

There was an interesting article I read awhile back about an engineering team that made its own carbon wheels when competing in the SAE university formula car race in Canada & the US.

Re: Carbon Fiber - Magnesium Wheels

I was at the Formula SAE competition and saw the school's carbon rims, they were pretty sweet, and then combined with their carbon body, wings, and undertray the car was basically a a rolling piece of carbon.
