    Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Going to finalize my 997S order on Monday. Trying to get some last minute opinion on Seal Gray vs Slate Gray, which color do you guys like better?

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Very different greys IMHO.
I think Slate grey is closer to Atlas grey, they're both quite dark.
    Whereas Seal is much lighter.
Slate is classier I would say and also more excluive.
Let's of Seal out there between 911, Boxster and Cayenne.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Slate grey is warmer (got a little tan or brown in it). Seal is a cooler (more blue, or more neutral).

Slate is a more dramatic color. IMHO.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Slate is definitely the way to go...I had a seal gray 996 and got bored with the color...the extra 3grand for slate is worth it...attached a pic of mine

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    yup, slate! :y
    -Joost-

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Seal Gray is awesome, slate is really nice too... when i saw slate and seal for the first time in the dealer i liked seal gray, i still do, seal is much "cooler" whereas slate is brownish and less appealing to me.

Seal Gray looks AWESOME when the sky is blue, that really makes the paint look great... look in the porsche brochure there is a picture of a seal gray 997 with mountains behind it and blue skies, that is a good example of how good the seal gray looks when its blue out!

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

What does it say about the other colors on offer when people argue the merits of different shades of GRAY?

I urge you to reconsider gray as a color. When slightly dirty is looks awful. A sport car should be not only exciting to drive but exciting to look at. Battleship gray (which are the colors you are considering) was design to hide the features of a ship on the ocean. Why do you want to hide the features of your 997S? Personally I know why but I suspect you and I do not agree on what the 997 looks like.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

They are both nice colours - I guess one of the reasons I went for Slate is that it's a bit more unusual. I've had nothing but compliments about the colour since getting mine in January.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

I just ordered a Slate 987. I saw Seal parked next to Slate at the dealership, and Slate, for me, had the wow factor. Seal is lovely too - I just felt Slate looked extra special. Very Aston Martin. The deciding factor for me though was how great it looked with my interior colour choice (sand beige). Sand worked fine with Seal, but next to Slate it looked amazing (IMO!!).

Nick, it all depends on the car. A Ferrari is different from a Porsche and especially here in Germany often people don't want to express their wealth with a screaming colour at their car. Moreover I think you can't compare the matt battleship gray with the metallic grays of the car makers.

Also I think a grayish colour looks fine even when dirty, as at such colours you hardly see the dirt!

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

rossi is right... there's a difference between some matt finish battleship grey and metallic colors like porsche's seal grey or ferrari's grigio titanio -- which both are very modern and techy looking IMO.

btw, james bond's first car described by ian fleming in "casino royale" was battleship grey - a supercharged bentley convertible coupe. power and performance -- yes. too flashy -- no thank you.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

in my opinion i must go with nberry, not that i dont like the seal or slate but i am in the same boat as nberry. i personally chose arctic silver,i know you will say its common and you are right, but in Greece all people think of the same way, so to avoid the COMMON Arctic Silver they all go and choose Seal Grey and very few indeed slate grey. So after all due to this fact Arctic silver in Greece isnt that common. But again in my opinion Arctic Silver is the best looking color for a 911 it really shows all the cars curves.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Seal, with yellow brake calipers...

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Booger your picture speaks volumes, seal grey is awesome Just because its quite common due to the fact its been around some years now,it nevertheless is beautiful ,so save the 3k and be happy

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Would be nice if Porsche would offer the Carerra wheels to be factory painted the same color as the car. (right now only stock and sport classics can be painted) Maybe next year? seal grey with seal grey wheels would be verrry interesting looking, IMO.

Why factory paint? Because when I get the car the last thing I'm gonna do is mess around getting them painted. Lazy? Or just don't want anymore headaches?

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Both are great colors but....

In the line up at my local dealer every other example is Seal Grey......its like a see of Seal! If you don't want to see yourself coming and going a lot of the time go with Slate.....nice, original, and rare.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Booger,
This is the first Seal picture I've seen that really makes me want a seal grey car, proof that those color can very under different light conditions.
    Superb car BTW.
Question, last time I saw a seal grey car under the sun, it had just been washed, and I saw shades of pink in it. This is not a joke, seriously guys, do some of you agree of not?
Obviously not bright pink, but shades of lighter, different than grey, colors.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Fanch ,some pics of my car to confirm your thoughts

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    another

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Humm, modern art?
Thanks Robbo, you confirmed what I though.
    Superb color indeed.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    Booger,

Is that your car? Absolutely beautiful!! Can't wait to get my Seal Gray.

In my area, it seems that most Porsches are silver. I don't see that many Seal Grey, but they turn my head when I do!!

    Kevin

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

    again

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Very nice Robbo! Really beautiful indeed!
    thanks!

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Fanch, is it just me or are you trying to spec your next car?

    What's it gonna be?

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Yes, white looks awesome when clean but you've cropped the front though - and that grey sports car in the forground is obscuring the rear wheel.

Absolutely! Seal gray fits the 997 perfectly. And IMHO you can still see this colour in a couple of years wihtout getting tired of it. And I absolutely agree with you, that it's nonsense to spend an extra 3k.

    Well Matt,
Let's just say that right now, I am still a very happy 996 C4 cab owner.
But I'm starting to look that little bit more into details.
I know I said I'd go for a coupe on my next 911 but truth is, you look at the work they've done with the 997 cab and your legs start getting all shaky again!;)
So right now, I'm looking into nice combos.
Something nice I thought and I haven't seen yet would be:
Seal Grey with Sea Blue int with Sea Blue soft top.

    Anyone please,
I have Metropole blue leather on my car and really love it, is Sea blue lighter ot darker? I hope it's darker.
    Thanks.

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

Francoise, do you think the sea blue interior fits with the seal grey?

Re: Seal Gray or Slate Gray

The car's mine, and the picture was already posted when I got the car last fall--sorry to those who've seen it already. Unfortunately, the car's been in the garage all winter. Can't wait for spring. More pictures at this thread if you're interested.
