    Brakes feel

Switching between my 997S and my BMW 530 series you immediately notice the different feel of the brakes, in favor of the BMW! Which surprises me given how good Porsche brakes usually are.

They stop the 997S fine but don't really give that much confidence. They remind me of the brakes on a Ferrari 355 I once owned. Stop the car but don't feel too great.

Only done 1100 miles so far on the car so I hope they begin to feel more positive as I approach 2000 miles. Anyone notice the same or the feel of their brakes improve once it is run in?

I have the standard S brakes.

    Very odd

when i had my C4S I had to drive a friends BMW 540 and was shocked at how bad the brakes felt in comparison. Not to say they were bad, just that by comparison they felt that way (like a bag of defrosted mushy peas if it helps).

The brakes on the 997S are essentially the same brakes as on my old C4S so would be surprised if there was a problem.

Did you use them gently for the first 200 miles? If you did not you may have glazed the pads before they were bedded in properly.

    Re: Very odd

What you mean by feel? There is little travel on a 911 brake pedal and no mushiness - there's a lot of that on the BMWs I drove.

Just a different philosophy. Your foot just needs to have more finesse... These are probably the best brakes on a stret car. The difference between a sports car and a "sports" sedan, I guess.

    Re: Brakes feel

I don't understand this thread. My wife's VW Bug has a more sensitive break pedal than my 997, but the Bug doesn't stop in a shorter distance than my 997. So too with the BMW sedan vs. 997 I would think?

    Re: Brakes feel

Let me guess, you've had you BMW a while? Probably you're just used to the BMW feel and the newness of the 997 is alien to you. I get this on new cars I buy, after a few hundred or thousand miles, it becomes more like a broken in pair of shoes and I feel more comfortable with it.

    Re: Brakes feel

I just ordered the turbo brake upgrade kit from EVOM... lets see how good they are...

    Re: Brakes feel

    EnglishMan listen,

i had exactly the same problem as you. I was suprised and starting to wonder what do all the editors in car magazines mean when they refer to Porsche as the car with the ultimate braking system.I also used to have a BMW and felt exaclty like you.
    So listen to my conclusions.
    1) Indeed the brakes are ultimate-the pedal stronger than other cars.
2)They feel unconfident in the beginning but they sure arent/they stop the car really fast.
    3) As the kilometers pass in your car this "problem" will be gone. And not only becqause the brakes will be at the correct point of usage but also because YOU will start to get used with them.
I have 3000 km in my car and i am totally used to them
4)The fact that the brake pedal is harder than usual is good and safe, it is like a harder steering wheel. it's more accuratge during high speeds.
Imagine beeing in a corner with high speed and needing just a little brake. If the pedal is soft and you push too much you might get a pack of oversteer, whereas if the pedal is hard and accurate you push it slightly and you get as braking as you need.

    but thats just my opinion.

    Re: Brakes feel

    Thanks Dilinger.

I agree with you. I need to climatize to the feel and stop driving the BMW :-). The BMW brakes are not as good for sure. They become mushy very quickly on all the BMWs I have had, including 2 Ms.

I should be at 2000 miles in just over a month and then we see if I have climatized.

    Re: Very odd

Pedal travel is longer in the BMW before anything happens. With the Porsche it's an "instant on" feeling to the brakes.

"Bite" you sense a great deal more bite on the Porsche's brakes than on the BMW.

Sure you have to push the brakes harder on the Porsche but I prefer that as it's easier to modulate your braking to the point just before ABS kicks in.

Dilinger has said the most important thing in the entire thread. This is EXACTLY correct.

If the control effort is too light, the high-g environment of very fast driving will overwhelm the driver with accidental control inputs caused by the g-loading on the driver's body parts.

Just "bracing" oneself while braking into a slow corner from high speed will "activate" ones limbs to a degree that will be difficult to moderate if the control effort is much smaller than the total force necessary to keep driver seated in the proper driving position.

This is why GT3-style sport seats are so cool for track driving. The lateral support is much better than "street" seats, keeping the driver erect in the proper seating position without needing to brace oneself by a death-grip on the steering wheel. This way, steering is so much more fun

Porsche's high-effort control inputs are perfect for frisky driving.

Low effort controls in other cars are for street posing (lazy, low-g driving), IMO.

    Re: Brakes feel

My car is going back to the dealer tomorrow to have the brakes checked. I've got to say, I'm not a fan of them - they are actually the weakest link of the car. I've now travelled 3600m and they have yet to improve. Will let you know the outcome (if indeed there is something wrong).
