Speed Trap Detectors in the UK - Which One is Best?

I will shortly be taking delivery of my new Boxster. In my every day car I have a Snooper S6 Neo detector which has been very unreliable with numerous faults and failures. So I don't intend to get another one for the Boxster. I've heard that the Origin unit is very good. I want one that detects the passive cameras through GPS location combined with laser detection. Any recommendations, guys?

Re: Speed Trap Detectors in the UK - Which One is Best?

My local Porsche dealer recommends Road Angel. They supply and fit it at the dealership. I don't have it myself so can't offer any personal insight into how reliable it is.

Re: Speed Trap Detectors in the UK - Which One is Best?

Geodesy Plus Radar has both GPS location combined with radar detection with a stealth installed radar antenna behind the front bumper. The Road Pilot GPS can also be installed with the same radar antenna for added radar detection, and also has a LASER detection package as well.

Problem is that laser dectetion ussually doesn't give you enough warning for you to lower your speed. Usually when you get the warning signal it just means you have been clocked already by the police since the laser beam does not disperse like the radar so its usually not detected until pointed at you directly (unless you get a freak rebound form another target) and this added to the little time the laser (LIDAR) needs to clock your speed (1/3 sec) it not as usefull as radar detcetion since the warning is often to late.

And remember the 'detectors' are becoming illegal in the UK. You only be permitted to use the ones where you download the locations - don't know whether that'll influence your decision....

As is exceeding the speed limits which none of us ever do, of course

Re: Speed Trap Detectors in the UK - Which One is Best?

I swapped from an old Snooper to the Road Angle which only realy works from downloaded info - first big difference was that it did not go off when passing all the automatic DIY shop doors, it also only alerts you to the camera on the same side of the road that you are going, however I have never had it pick up a direct hit. (yet) The older snooper used to "detect" each camera as it approached and so if it did not go off it ment there was no film in the camera - and yes its true, you could just sail on by..Also the display is quite large, and bright, I have to say I'm not a big fan even though it does its job

Thanks for that - BUT the Truvelo cameras are passive and work off sensors in the road, so dodgy to rely on the LRD, which is why the GPS systems are good for fixed cameras.
Also the S6 box is too bulky to fit tidily in the Boxster. So I think I will go for the Origin. My S6 is AGAIN knackered and with the dealer for return under warranty. That's FIVE failures in 18 months!

That's bonkers! How could a snooper or any detector know (or detect) if there was film in a camera or not?!
Even if a camera didn't have any film (most of them are digital now anyway and don't require reloading) it still emits the radar signal and still flashes if you exceed the set limit. Same goes for 'dummy cameras', about 40% of cameras in and around London (and I'm sure other places) are 'dummies', they will flash but are not capable of taking pictures.

Also most police forces only have a limited number of cameras to go around their many camera sites. They swap them around. It used to be that the Met only had one camera for every 5/6 sites, obviously not including dummies. As you can see this drastically reduces your chances of capture. This all only applies to the somewhat old fashioned 'Gatso' type cameras.

More of a concern are mobile cameras in or at the side of vans parked at the side of the road. Also the 'SPECS' things seem highly efficient, haven't ever seen them but I think there are some on the M6 or somewhere around there. Hand held lasers are always a worry but again. I haven't seen to many of those.

I don't know if your insurance company requires the fitting of a tracking device or not (bear with me!) but mine did on my 997S (I know they aren't as strict on Boxsters) so I went with the RAC Trackstar+ system which is a GPS tracking system, as part of that you can have what they call the 'Safe Speed' option for about Pounds70 per year. This is built in to the system and hidden, it provides warning (by a series of beeps) as you approach fixed site cameras. Must use the same system as the other GPS items. I've got it and it works well (now I've had the aerial re-sited) and as I said, its completely hidden. Still no good for the hand held devices, mobile cameras in vans and road work ones but its not bad, especially as the radar/laser ones are being outlawed. I know what you mean about 'so is speeding' but it's just one more thing for Traffic Plod to look out for...

I absolutely hate wearing a seat belt and refuse to do so but for the fact that the 997 has the most annoying 'bong bong bong!!!' until you put it on!! I'm working on that though... Hope you don't have to put up with it in the Boxster.

Why dont you ask Mike WMM8...M8MMW...Mr. Radar!
He invents, sells and produces radars etc. He must know.
