    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

I had the pictures sent to me and I can assure you:
this car on the pictures may have all wheel drive and it may be a C4 but it definetely is NOT the C4S or a so called "widebody".
This is the body of a 997 Carrera/Carrera S, many people, especially 996 owners, seem to forget that the 997 is much wider in the rear than the 996 C2.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

RC is this car any wider than the current 997 .

thats what i thought, as per my post on rennlist. the car doesnt look any wider than a regular C2/S

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Sorry, but that is not a standard 997 but a wide(r) body..
    Zürich

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

I think this is the standard body. Comparing with the other pics of standard cars, it looks the same. The only thing that seems special to mee is the rims... those rims are used on the test mules...

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

No thats a normal 997 back end ,just looks wider as the angle of the photo.I took some photos of mine the other day from the same angle as it really looks wide/fat at the back

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

    another standard car...

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Indeed it looks like a normal 997 body

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Normal 997 width with the effect of the camera angle. Its the effect of the hips, the narrowbody 997 actually looks wider than a 996C4S in real life.

    Comparison:

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

The original poster on Rennlist did state that the VIN supposely was an 06 model and the door sills said Carrera 4. The rims just look like an aftermarket set of rims. Who really knows, but why would a 997 Carrera 4 be in Washington? But it is hard to tell if it has Washington or Georgia plates. It does look like it may have Georgia plates on it.

As I said in my earlier post: it might have been a test mule what this guy saw, with a 06 VIN and even with AWD and a C4 lettering on the door sills (I wonder how he saw that with the doors closed but anyway). But the car on the picture is definetely NOT a wide boy/C4S, it has the "normal" 997 body.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

    I'm convinced now
It looks so much wider on these pictures, must be depending on the (low) angle. I've driven behind a 997 a couple of times and then it looks less wide.
    Anyway it's a nice ass
    Zürich

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Ummm, it looked no different than my car's big butt.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

As others have suggested, it seems to be an optical illusion based on both camera angle and lens focal length: very wide angle in the 'spy' photo, making the wing mirrors look small (as Carlos mimicks in his photo of his own car), compared with Porsche publicity shots taken with a long tele-photo lens.

If you calculate the ratio in the two photos between the car width and height (I used the top of the exhaust to the top of the rear window) they are nearly the same, actually a tad wider in the publicity photo (!), with any difference due no doubt to the angle of view, wide-angle lens effect (the rear window is in a different plane to the exhaust) and the fuzzy 'spy' photo making any measurement imprecise.

PS: I frankly think the current proportions perfect and any wider risks looking exagerated, in my view.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

It is a photo from someone's cell phone

RC, do you know when the official information about the 997 C4S will be released?
(This is a yes or no question, since I doubt that you will tell us the date if you do know - you bastard )

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

I dunno, I think it may be a WB.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

This is definately a WB. I was at this dealership picking up parts yesterday and the car is about 2 inches wider than the standard 997 and 997S. It made the 19" wheels look very small.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

a 997 widebody would be Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide, and it would look pretty cool, I think? Hopefully we'll see it.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Looks like a 997 with 18-in wheels IMHO.

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

This thread is not unlike debates that likely go on endlessly at porn sites arguing, "are they real, or are they surgically enhanced?"

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

I just posted a picture of a comparison measurement I did against my 997 Cs...

    http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=186211&page=2&pp=15

I'll try to post the pic here too...

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

(Here's the text to go with the above pic...)

I just did a little measure/comparision with the pics against my 997 Cs..

The car as shown is wider... however there seems to be a little asymmetry going on ??

I matched-up the distance between the edges of the license plates... and did the measurements as shown...

The left of the car is different... wider than the right side !

So, either there is some "lens" distortion in the camera or.... ?

well, draw your own conclusions ??

    Re: 997 wide body spotted!!

Bitsa, your comparison goes wrong; it is the lense perspective that you see. cellphone lenses are very small. Therefore they are relatively thick and roundish. That gives the spherical abberation... things tend to look like the were refelcted in a christmas bulb. Things tha are further away of the lens tend to be drawn to the sides when they are not exact in the middle. That is why in the pic of the "widebody" the mirrors are so far outside the car.
Also, you say that one side seems wider than the other; the same happened in the pic of your S... take a look at how the body and the tires "merge", one differewntly than the other. That is because the lense was not in a plane parallel to the rear of your car, but slightly diagonally. The smaller (= thicker) the lense, the worse that effect is.
    -Joost-

J-Lo's butt in Porsche copycat shock!

If you look at where the body bisects the wing mirror you can see the shot is slightly off-center, hence the asymmetry.

I suspect this is a little like Hollywood Watch on J-Lo's butt - Has it grown? Has it shrunk? is it lop-sided? Does anyone really care?

You should listen to Joost...he's probably the only one who knows what he's saying.

    Look...another widebody.
    http://www.rennteam.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=494&sort=1&cat=500&page=1

Or look here, the car on the left is a "narrow" body and the one on the right a widebody. Do you see the difference?
