If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

As some of you may know, the Radical SR8 is the new Radical with the new V8 engine thats currently being finished off developing (with the new 6-speed sequential for it). It will produce more power than the SR3Turbo, close to 400HP, and with a better powerband and torque than the SR3 Turbo, and reports say that its much faster than the SR3 Turbo on the track. And now they are also improving its incredible aerodicamics. So if the SR3Turbo did a 7:19 in nurburgring in just one and only lap, then I can't wait to see this one! ... if I had the money (probably about the price of a 997S or cheaper but maintenance and repairs won't be cheap I'm guessing), this would be my weekend track car.

RADICAL SR8 CAN NOW FLY ON THE CEILING

Latest tests show more downforce than weight

In its latest tests last Friday, Radical's new SR8 trackday/race car generates more downforce than its weight.

Its new aerodynamic package, penned by Radical's chief designer Nick Walford, was put to the test and passed with what the company called "flying colours". At the SR8's maximum speed of 170mph, the sports prototype produced more downforce than the car's weight, complete with a full tank of fuel and driver.

Seen here in Radical's 2005 works livery, the SR8 has two and a half times as much downforce as its SR3 predecessor.

Radical co-founder Phil Abbott who was at the test said, "We're very pleased with the outcome of the test. Not only does the SR8 have the downforce to match the car's performance, but the car is superbly balanced. Our next test will be to get our best driver, Michael Vergers to drive the car upside down in a tunnel!"

After the all-new car's first outing last week, Vergers said, "The car is awesome. It is the SR3 Turbo and then some. The power delivery is so smooth. This is a truly great car."

Abbott was equally chuffed: "An all-new engine, all-new transaxle and all-new bodywork and the car ran beautifully. The SR8 reaches 150mph before you even know it. It's the fastest car I've ever driven by a mile. We've a little bit more work to do. Fine tuning the engine mapping and a minor gearbox oil leak, were the only issues. We will be in the MIRA wind tunnel on Friday to setup the aero package and back on the circuit next Monday."

Carlos - Is that car street legal in Spain? I think they are in UK...

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

    brunner,
These are not even close to what we normally consider a "street car" to be, and who ever compares them to a Ferrari, Lambo or Porsche is out of their mind! apples to oranges IMO...

    Grant,
The SR3 is street legal in GB and therefore its street legal in any european comunity country as far as I know. But I don't know about the SR8 yet. Of course they wouldn 't be very versatile for street use though I would think, no roof or windscreen, doors, electronic aids, ground clearance, reliability, etc. Only for the ocasional purpose I guess, maybe to the track and back?

Yeah, but that's a big advantage, so you don't have to buy a truck and trailer (and a place to park them)

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

Absolutely, and you could also use it for other specific street realeted events or drives with friends, which would be enjoyable too but I personally don't know if I could bear the embarrassment of driving such a car on the streets though, thats were a helmet with a dark vidor would come in handy

    Grant,

You can get the SR4 or SR3 with the SVA-Kit (Single Vehicle Approval). But the car will only be street legal in the UK. There is little chance to get it registered in any other EU Country.

    Best regards

You know, you may be right about that. I know you can drive it all around europe with GB plates with no problems, but maybe getting it registered under other EU plates may be more difficult

    OT:
Does anyone know what's necessary to register a car in the UK? Does one have to proof residency?

    Cheers

new Radical with the new V8 engine

    What engine are they using?

    Gary

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

    Gary,
Its their own developed engine, a 2.6l normally aspirated V8 that revs just past 10,000RPM
Its producing about 380HP on the dino now, but they have still a few finmishing mods to do that will increase HP a bit more.

    Imagine the feel of that 10k-RPM high-reving 400HP N/A V8 inside a car under 600kg!

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

FWIW, a buddy of mine told me that the two radicals at the track the day he went each resulted in 1 hour track closures - one for all the oil that covered the track when a part failed and one for all the anti-freeze when a part failed.

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

Don't expect Porsche reliability with these types of cars, thats one of the reasons I used above for questioning their "streetcar" capabilities. And not only reliability, which is not that big a problem in the track as it is on streetcars, but I believe the "wear and tear" of parts is quite high, more in tune with race cars with engine rebuilds, etc. and not like normal street cars which are built to last. The good side is that the parts are cheap comparatively. But a lot also depends on the model, some Radicals aren't even close to street legal and are practically single-seat race cars for exclusive track use or competition, other models are more civilised, street legal, and with more conservatively tunned engines and parts like the base SR3.

    Thomas,
See the UK vehicle registration site. . I think the "keeper" of the vehicle must have a UK address and provide an insurance cover note on the car. If you know someone who lives in the UK, you can ask them to be the registered "keeper", but you can still be the legal owner. If you need more info, you can email vehicles.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk

Scary. Did they basically splice two 4-cyl motorcycle engines together with a common crank for this project? Makes you wonder about reliability.

    Gary

Re: If you thought the Radical SR3 Turbo was fast...

Gary - I think they did basically conbine 2 bike motors to make the V8 (like BMW did with two inline 6's to make their V12 and Porsche did with two 944 motors to make the 928 V8). I think it should be quite reliable and inexpensive to maintain, since motorcycle engines are both of those things also...
