997S: clunking noise in the trunk area

has anyone else had this problem: when driving I hear a clunking sound from the trunk area -- generally when i hit a small bump. I thought it was the DVD/6-CD changer compartment so I added a little tape to the seams. But it is still clunking. Now i think it may be the suspension....i'll take it to the dealer after Thanksgiving but was just wondering if anyone else is having this probem.

    Thanks!

Re: 997S: clunking noise in the trunk area

Sounds like something may be loose. Let us know what it is?

Re: 997S: clunking noise in the trunk area

The dealer checked the car today and unfortunately during the test drive they didn't hear the clunking sound! of course on my way home i heard the noise so i think they probably heard it and didn't think it was unusual.

Also the dealer put the car on the rack and tightened all sort of things...now i'm hearing a few squeaks that weren't there before - yikes. I'll let you know what is going on after another 100 miles or so.

Re: 997S: clunking noise in the trunk area

I have the base 997 with the S wheels and I have the same clunking sound when going over small bumps. It really doesn't bother me because the car is tight otherwise. I think you have to expect this with a car that is fairly hard sprung and with such low-profile tires.

Re: 997S: clunking noise in the trunk area

Ok, the clunking noise is driving me batty!! I have an appointment at the dealer on Tuesday -- but its going to drive me crazy until then. I was driving with a friend and we definitely agreed that the noise is coming from the left side of the car and it gets worse the longer you drive the car. Actually, i think it has something to do with the suspension.....otherwise it is some grimlin in the trunk flapping around.

I've tried taking the plastic covers off of the NAV,CD and battery compartments. That didn't work. I put tape on the seams of the platic covers -- that didn't work. I removed the cover for the GPS. That didn't work. I tightened the plastic trunk liner - that didn't work. I untightened the plastic trunk liner - that didn't work. At this point i don't think its something in the trunk. Time for Porsche to play around and figure this one out. It is tooooooo noticeable to live with.

Maybe this is what you're hearing? Let us know what you find out?

Make sure the dealer checks the nut on the roll bar hanger link. They have been known to work loose, causing a clunk which fits well with your description. This should be one of the first things the dealer looks at anyway, though. It's an especially likely candidate if it arises when only one front wheel is deflected, causing roll bar to be loaded.

Re: 997S: clunking noise in the trunk area - RESOLVED!

I am just too happy now. The dealer resolved the issue. I was getting pretty annoyed with the clunking sound that occurred everytime i hit a little imperfection in the road!

Here is what the dealer did:

    1) removed & installed 2 lower track arms
    2) removed & installed 2 front stabilizer links

Comment on service invoice: Tech found that driver front stabilizer lower link not torqued properly.

Result=> no more clunking!!!!!! YEAH!!!!! The car is just too awesome.

Funny side bar: it was raining when i picked up my car from the dealer. The service manager was waiting for me to arrive so he could close the shop. As soon as i drove off of the lot and turned on the wipers they began to squeak something awful! Go figure. I had just applied Rain-X a few days before. What the heck? I went to an auto supplies shop to buy new wipers and the manager suggested that I strip the windows and clean the wiper blades before buying new ones. Well, it worked. I'll try re-applying Rain-X another day and see if the stickiness/squeaking re-occurs.

For now....i just love this car. What an awesome machine.

    Yo G,

I wonder if they changed all that suspension stuff for nothing. Mine had the same sound under the same highway conditions, and I deemed the problem to be the high speed air flow causing the licence plate to rattle. I slipped in a small piece of rubber and the noise went away. The noise was so loud, I thought that the engine was about to blow from the front of the car. The engine did eventually blow, but that remains an unresolved story for another forum topic.

No, i think they got it right....it was definitely something going on in the suspension area. It is A-OK now!

If it came from assembly that way, it is not acceptable, NOT in a Porsche. I accept a little bug here and there, but not an obvious assembly misstep. NO EXCUSES! If I was managing the assembly line, I would find out who assembled your car and I would fire that worker.

I do not like Rain-X. Clean your windshield w/ a good ammonia-free cleaner and you are set.
