New Family Car - Audi S6
We picked up a new family rocket, a 2018 Audi S6. Not very common in Switzerland, as most people seem to stick with the A6 models or they go all the way up to the RS6. For us, the S6 hit the sweet spot. After all, it has got that glorious V8!
How did we get there? First of all the S3 was starting to become a bit small. I am surprised it served this long for a family with two small kids. Packing for long holidays, including a twin pram... been there, done that. Expert level in luggage tetris. Now the two little rascals turn 3 and more and more toys have to be hauled along
We looked at and test drove all kind of cars. Starting with electric vehicles from Audi, Mercedes and Jaguar. Comfortable and responsible, but the prospect of having to stop and recharge even for trips within Switzerland killed them all. We then went through the full offering from all brands, from boring mini buses to luxury cruise missiles. We kept returning to Audi as the benchmark.
The latest Audi S4 and S6 both have diesels. I was positively surprised until I learned that the exhaust sound is artificial and produced by the interior speakers. Bah! Even worse, the four exhaust tips, all of them fake. Embarrassing. Then touch screens everyf’kingwhere. Yes, it looks cool, but is terrible to use.
So in the end the list had to include Audi but exclude EV, diesel and touchscreens. We found one of the last built Audi S6 (generation C7), one year old and barely run in, for half the sticker price. Ticked all boxes.
The S6 has the same wonderful twin-turbo 4.0l V8 as the RS6, but in a lower tune and with smaller turbos. 450hp and 550Nm torque. 0-100km/h in about four and a half seconds. And that engine is a masterpiece! A wonderful subdued V8 rumble with a great character. An American muscle car dressed in a station wagon costume
The transmission is a 7-gear dual clutch which is surprisingly quick (although the software sometimes hesitates on manual downshift in lower gears). Under full load in dynamic mode the transmission furiously slams through the gears in a manner which leaves even the Porsche PDK jealous.
The car has got quattro all wheel drive, air suspension which raises/lower the car 20mm, panorama sunroof, Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, etc. and a rear trunk that fits Legoland.
Very happy with this choice. Not only can we haul all our stuff around, but daddy gets to put a smile on his face whenever that START ENGINE button is pressed and the V8 fires up with a deep rumble...
Proper photos and more reviews coming at some later point.
