    Hybrid Porsche?

    Wow!!!

I had not even heard rumors of this before. Of course, there's no guarantee it's true either. The source is supposed to be inside Porsche.

See this article in Autoweek today:

Toyota system may be used to power version of Cayenne

STUTTGART -- Porsche may build a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV using a Toyota powertrain, a Porsche source says.

Toyota and the German carmaker would adapt the gasoline-electric powertrain to be used in the Lexus RX 400h, the source told Automobilwoche, a German sister publication of Automotive News. The RX 400h, based on the Lexus RX 330, is slated to go on sale in the United States in December.

The Porsche source says the automaker is conducting feasibility studies for a hybrid Cayenne.

Porsche has said it won't offer diesel models, so it needs an alternative powertrain that uses less fuel and emits less pollution.

Porsche needs to meet tougher tailpipe regulations in Europe and the United States, where rule changes are beginning to take effect. Stricter U.S. emissions regulations will be phased in through 2009. The United States is Porsche's No. 1 sales market.

Toyota thinks the 270-hp system on the RX 400h is suitable for the Cayenne. "The system in our Lexus SUV would fit well on the Cayenne," says a Toyota manager, who adds that Toyota's aim is to spread its hybrid technology worldwide.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

So now they admit they are using to much fuel

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

    Interesting. Thanks for the pointer.

Hadn't heard about this but the hesitation issue and the new generation of hybrids got me to wondering.

I guess Porsche should do something to 'cover' the Mercedes Vision GST hybrid.

You don't really expect to drive a 450 HP monster with more than 2.5 ton weight at 5 litres/100 km fuel consumption?
This would be like getting married to a supermodel and complaining that she spends too much money on cosmetics and dresses.

rc ,your comparisons between porsche and womens are becoming more and more frequent
threads are becoming hotter and hotter..

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

They're also talking about it in "thecarconnection.com"

    LINK

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

They are quoting the same source, Automotive News. But, if TheCarConnection is reporting it, I guess they are giving the source some credibility.

I think it's a great idea really. When we think of hybrids we tend to think of ecology friendly, economical vehicles, like the Prius. But, locomotives and tugboats are hybrids too. Hybrid technology also offers many possibilities for a sports car. The combination of capabilities of the gasoline and electric motors offers many opportunities, beyound just saving gas or reducing emissions.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

who'd pay porsche prices fer toyoter....?

    ... whatta rip!?

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

There's plenty of people willing to pay Lexus prices for a Toyota.

Seriously, Toyota is a great organization that delivers quality products at reasonable prices. If Porsche is going to partner with someone on a hybrid project, Toyota is a good choice.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

And if Posche is eventually bought out- might as well be by the world's best run and by FAR most profitable car company and who will probably be number 1 within 5-8 years . Conventional thinking was that VW Group would be a natural buyer, but they are a dog in the world auto market and fading . Toyota engineers have had a major hand in revising the entire Porsche manufacturing process in the past decade so there is already a comfort factor there between the two companies.

    Another editorial comment :

    Autoextremist

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

Those Autoextremist guys are too funny! Some of their suggested names for the new Cayenne hybrid:

Cayenne FOI (we're Flat Out of Ideas)

    Cayenne RSE (Rising Sun Edition)

    Cayenne HB (Hybrid, Borrowed)

I agree with you about Toyota. I don't think they will buy Porsche, or that Porsche is for sale, but they are a very well managed company that seems to be doing everything right. I have owned a few Toyotas and even the cheapest one was a very solid, well constructed and reliable vehicle.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

    Why?

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

To appeal to that group that really want, and maybe need, a Cayenne but are held back by the political incorrectness of a gas guzzling SUV. Any kind of hybrid gives you great PC, makes you "green" and gives you immunity from the anti-SUV crowd.

Well, that's the theory anyway. The Ford Escape is the first hybrid SUV but it's not really running in the right circles to test this proposition. The Lexus RX hybrid should be out soon. That will be a good test. The RX is so small, it's almost PC as is.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

So a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid will have a body shared with a Toureg, susp similar to but just " tuned" different from the Toureg, engine from the upcoming Lexus RX400h , transmission made by Japan's Aisin. So what exactly is the "porshaness" of this car aside from it's badges, frog face and an interior not as nicely finished as the VeDub ?
It's looking more like the eyeglass frame, watch or shoe biz where a handful of anonymous factories controlled by just a few players churn out the same stuff branded a hundred different ways ( and prices) by a hundred different companies - like what's been happpening in the electronics/computer/tech world for past 2 decades also.
There will be a day not far in the future where cheap labor contract factories in mainland China will build ( and eventually partly or wholly engineer ) everything to spec for the remaining 2 or 3 worldwide mega car companies, who will become mainly marketing and branding and financing concerns.

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

eww... eww... eww... Porsche/VW is an on-again off-again love affair between the companies that the good Dr. left his mark on...

but Toyota?... I'm grateful for the help the Japanese carmaker dignitaries gave Porsche in 1996 which directly led to the changes necessary to help it survive and build its true savior... my baby, the 1997 Boxster...

but a Jap-Crap engine in a Porsche?... NEVER...
READ MY LIPS... NEVER, [censored] EVER!

    Re: Hybrid Porsche?

Superior products require development $$$ and saavy marketing keeps demand buoyant and resale high. . Looking forward, Toyota will make $$$$ and VW Group will not. So if you are a Porsche loyalist, who's the better " sugar daddy " for all the trick stuff you want in the 911 , etc., the next 20 years ? In the US , VWs and Audis are like Saabs - they require massive subsidized leases or incentives like a GM truck to move product and therefore have terrible resale, no matter how advanced Audis are in technology.
