    S wheels and NYC Architects

An old friend of mine is a partner in a well-regarded Architectural firm in NYC.

Talked on the phone and then I emailed him the pictures of the three wheels under three fenders on three 911s posted here a few days ago.

He showed the pictures to people coming in and out of his office and asked which wheels they liked most.

The results: The "Carrerra" (five spoke) wheels were most appreciated, then the sport classics and, interestingly, the "s" wheels came in last.

    No Bull.

These guys are obsessed with design but not totally into cars like us.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

Maybe that the "S" wheels are not the most beautiful ones for many people. And I think you need some time to get used to it.

The first time I saw this wheels I wasn't so fond of it. Today some months later I really started to like them. They are really some kind of special.

And let's be honest. Beside the headlamps and these wheels there haven't changed a lot. On my test drive in the middle of the city almost noboy noticed this brand new 997. And I wasn't very silent on the road. You really have to be an enthusiast to see the difference.

I will have these "S" wheels on my car for sure.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

    Max,

what do you think about the fact that the "S"-wheels look fairly architecural. They are more geometrical than the other two - I could imagine that it is too technical for many.

I could believe that people who work in the architectural segment day in and out would like to see something different when they have their time off.

Glad to have the freedom of choices - whether it is a smart move to place those "technical" wheels on the more expensive "S"-model will be obvious in a couple of month. Since quite a few people go for them and don't have a problem with this I'd say it is one of the less important issues to complain about.

I would like to know what those architects say about the wheels in two weeks, months and years because I do believe that their design, just like a lot from Porsche, needs a certain time to get used to first - just like mentioned above!

    Greetings!

What's "scary" is those guys are all proponents of the Bauhaus.

    comments were:

the reiteration of the Porsche badge shape cutout five times didn't really get pulled off.

The spokes and hub of wheel look too sturdy for the car

The wheel is different and interesting but seems "arbitrary" and does not "match" the car.

Totally unscientific, just an amalgam of independent professional points of view.

Silly really, but for those more "conservative" among us, encouragment to go for optional wheels if so inclined.

The years-from-now issue: I'll ask about this and report back. Interesting to theorize how "classic" looks are injected into today's too-odd-to-handle designs.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

I'm blind, I've been looking at those wheels for 4 months and I did not see the badge shape, I might not have ordered Carrera Classics if I had

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

I didn't notice the badges either, but I still think the Classics are the best choice. Initially I thought the standard "S" wheels were hideous, but I have to admit they've grown on me. My least favorite would have to be the Sport Design wheels. They just seem kind of plain.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

Architects ? They'd probably pick a Pontiac Aztec as a well " designed " car , something avant garde .

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

exactly the order i put them in.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

I have just been to Colorado where Alamo inflicted one of those on me as a 4WD hire car, this must be the worst looking current car

    Me too.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

Form follows function so of course they would find the thin spoked wheel the best. They would probably laugh at the fake twin exhausts as well.

Re: S wheels and NYC Architects

i believe the fake twin exhausts are there to differntiate the carrera and carrera S models, no other reason than internal 'one-upsmanship' within the brand (just like w/ the boxster models).

why else would they make it so you can't interchange the tips?

unlike other car manufactuers, which use pipes to make their cars seem sportier than the competition

Earlier pictures of exhaust showed a Y shaped weldment on the S tailpipes which was covered by the dual tips trim piece.

Later photos show an S tail pipe where there is no Y weldment, the polished dual tips just bolt onto a straight single pipe.

So, that's the discrepancy. I think the "Y" weldment has been dropped in favor of the single pipe.

Makes it easy to convert to the "cheaper" model tips. "Oval" ones look better IMHO.

(note: just being stupid/sarcastic/funny/teasing with "cheaper")

I'm just gonna paint my S tips flat black and go from there.
