    California's "new" exhaust law (2019)...explained

Since we have many users from California here...

    https://jalopnik.com/why-people-are-suddenly-freaking-out-over-californias-e-1831620651

Interesting, I didn't know that laws in California are similar to German laws.

    95dB? Oh boy... Smiley

I would think that the car manufacturer exhaust sound would be below the 95db level.

In practice, very doubtful a policeman would take the time to issue a ticket unless it was ridiculously loud. I suppose while at full throttle some OEM exhaust may exceed 95db but in that case a citation for excessive noise is the less of your worries. indecision

In Germany, we have special police task forces in various regions, going after too loud cars... The fine can be expensive and even worse, they can confiscate the car on the spot, transport it to the "TÜV" and if you're unlucky, you even spend a couple of days or longer without a car. Not pretty.

This is why it is important that a car sounds good stock over here, without any mods. Smiley

    95db is actually very low.

Laguna Seca has a 98db noise limit.

918 is above that and needs a waiver to run.

I believe Aston goes over 98db as well, and from memory so does a GT3RS.

I doubt your 918 and myGT3RS is above 95db unless at full throttle for a period of time. In that case, the policeman will be issuing a citationfor much larger fine and violation. smileyThe other day I was at only 7000 rpm’s and my speed was 130 miles per hour. Had I been stopped they may have confiscated my car. indecision

There is extensive and knowledgeable discussion surrounding this on the latest Smoking Tire podcast; the Jalopnik article does not offer a nuanced view.

95dB means very little without understanding whether it is A-Weighted or C-weighted or Z-Weighted and from what distance it is measured (sound level dissipates quickly as you increase distance to the source).

They even have special stops for moped riders to ensure the 50cc machines can not exceed certain speeds. Smiley
