OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

Hey guys...do those on the board who have a cabriolet..when you guys are driving it, you do it with the softop open or closed...i'm asking this because here in S.Miguel, there's a lot of cabrio but most of the drivers drivem them with the top close even if its hot like hell...

We have a Miata and its the car that i usually drive and the only times that i drive the Miata with the top close is either when its raining, i'm with cold or its freezing like hell...other than that i always drive it with the top open, day, afternoon, night, early morning, early night, sky is blue, grey, grenn, yellow, etc....

    And you guys?????

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

the soft top is always down from march to october .
I close the top when it's raining,or in speedway ...
I NEVER use the hard top in winter...too ugly!

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

Hey, did you get your driverslicense back? I hope so!

Whenever I drive a convertible I do it with the top down, except for the mentioned reasons!

Most convertibles have a heating and heated seats, so it's not that big of a problem in the cold - but I also see several people drive convertibles with the top up. Unless it is due to a very short trip, e.g. moving inside of the city, I see no sense in it!

One nice aspect about driving a convertible is that it is way more relaxing to me than anything else!

    Greetings!

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

Maybe this helps: I spend every year almost a month in Florida together with my family. We usually go there around end of february or beginning of march because it isn't that hot and we can still enjoy a warm weather and warm water.
Sometimes however it is very hot outside, especially in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. Our hotel in Ft. Lauderdale is pretty good and a lot of cabrio drivers stop there to spend a few nights for a business meeting, vacation or just to take dinner at the nice restaurant. I always observed that the soft top was closed and I didn't understand. So when a nice couple got out of a Mercedes SL 500 together with a 3 year old kid, I found the courage to approach them because I was with my daughter too and I thought this would be a good "excuse" to ask them. They both were very nice, we even have eMail contact and the woman gave me a simple explenation: when it is very hot, they drive with the soft top closed because they enjoy the A/C. Especially when they go out or when they go to work or a business meeting, they don't want to be wet allover and/or have visible sweat stains allover the dress. I started to understand.
So maybe this is the reason: if people drive to work in a Cab and it is very hot outside, they prefer to have it cool and get fresh to their work. I always enjoy driving my wife's SLK 32 with the top opened but I went to my office once and was wet allover. My back was so wet, there was a huge dark sweat stain visible (I had a dark olive coloured shirt on) and it looked horrible. Never again.

I remember with my 914 that when it was hot like hell, I would also cook inside the car if the top was off. Especially if you have a black interior, it gets very hot inside the car. I would drive the car with the top down only when the temperature was between 65 degrees F and about 85 degrees F.

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

when it is hot I sometimes put the top down and turn on the AC full blast.

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

I can talk from my experience, living in Houston where temp. year round is around 95F (35 C) with humidity around %80 to %90 which makes the temp with heat index sometimes around 112F (44.5 C) , it makes it unbearable to put the top down.

I used to have a '95 993 Cab. and a Boxster in '98 and believe it or not I probably had the top down 1 or 2 months out of the year. For this very reason I personally prefer coupe over cab.

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

Countries where cabs are selling the best aren't the hottest one !!! In Europe, the UK, Germany and Scandinavia are cabriolet's largest markets .... on the other hand, very few are sold in Italy, Spain, Portugal ...

I lived in South Florida for 6 years and I would drive with the top down only in winter when it's cool outside. The last thing you want is to drive with the top down and an outside temperature in the mid-90's because you're just frying !!!!

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

How true: a few years ago a friend from Spain visited Germany and she was surprised how many Cabs were driving here. She didn't understand why people would drive in a car with open top at 10*C outside temperature.
The truth is: I sometimes wonder about that too. I enjoy driving my wife's SLK 32 when it is very hot outside but this doesn't happen to often in Germany. Last year was just great, we had almost every day 30*C and more for a few months. This year, the spring/summer time wasn't that great and driving my 997 with both windows and the sunroof open was pretty much sufficient for me. I would probably buy a Cab over here as a third, fourth or whatever car but not as my daily driver. My wife drives her SLK 32 every day but she doesn't open the top too often. Maybe this is why she loves retractable hard tops and no soft tops.
BTW: I recently heard from a friend that BMW plans to build a 3-series Cab with a SLK-type hard top.

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

That's true, it's sometimes only too hot to drive with the Top down. You do'nt want to sit in your garden without an umbrella if the sun is shining to hot ...

Therefore it's nice to drive open in the evening.

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

My parents bought me a Toyota Solara convertible in 2000 as my 18th birthday gift. Till I sold it 8 months later, I only put the top down 3 times. First time, in the dealership and the dealer was showing me how it worked; second time, my friend wanted to see how it worked; third time, the buyer wanted to check if the top was working!! As a matter of fact, I hardly open the sunroof on my current car...

Re: OFF TOPIC...Stupid question to you guys about cabrios...

I seldom open the top of my CLK cab since the air is too dirty and it's too hot. However, it is fine in the very early morning. There is one funny thing I always do when top down, I do switch on the A/C.
