    Tangled with a GTR.......

Went to the track yesterday(lightning in NJ), fast 1.9 mile track, got a chance to mix it up with a modded GTR in the red run group (one below instructor).
Now, my car isn't stock, neither was his( not real sure what he had other than a possible exhaust). The first session in the morning he followed me, my car was a little loose so I let him by, but on his arse the rest of the session. The next session I got my tires dialed in(waaaay too much pressure), I followed him, very fast car.....but not fast enough!
By turn 5 he was waving me past, then he just couldn't keep up in either the straights or corners. The third and final session wasn't even close.
Overall, I was very impressed with the GTR, I could see how they would give a stock turbo fits. They handle well and have a lot of power, but the car is gigantic on the track, godzilla for sure. 7:29 power, not sure about that!
I have a video, but I somehow recorded it in zoom mode, I'll try and fix it later and post it up.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

Very interesting thanks for sharing Chris

Out of curiosity, what exactly did you do to your tyre pressures?

    well done

Too many laps for the GT-R (brakes, tires)

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Great report & picture

Looking at the picture you posted it becomes obvious that the GTR will have a pretty poor high-speed performance. Just look at how large the GTR is compared to the 997TT Very poor CwxA coefficent...

Very true, unfortunately most people think that the aerodinamic drag depends on the Cd coeficcient alone and forget about the frontal surface area which has an even greater effect since they can vary more than the Cd between cars (given same speed and air density)

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Even the gt3 passed him!
I was running 32fr/36r hot MSC.
Not sure what happened to him later, brakes probably.
Very fast car though, esp for the price.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Chris,

I have run even lower hot temps in my Cups to get them closer to Hoosier-esque adhesion levels. I think you might like a smidge lower on the rear temps. The Michelin white papers call for 30 psi hot, so I start at 27-28 cold and bleed off prn.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

Yes, but my rears are at the wear bars now, last time at the glen I had them at 31 all around, ran really well!

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Chris,

Cool story. Even with relatively modest engine tuning mods it doesn't sound like you give anything away on the track. Seems like dialing in the suspension is way more important on the TT than adding more power and whatever you did works like a charm. Imagine if you had crazy hp. (ie. min. 700-800 at crank). Would it even truly be usable on the track ? Seems like you would know as well as anybody as you daily drive your TT also.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Thanks for the post.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

The car runs great now, it really doesn't need anymore hp at all, suspension is key. I would venture to say, outside of an exhaust, you don't need any more at all, really. My friend in the gt3 (red as well) could keep up in the corners but was a distant spec on the straights.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

great post, thanks for sharing. love these real world comparisons, and glad to hear that you took a GTR "scalp"

having said that, i do believe (as you mentioned) that a stock turbo would be in trouble.

no offense and i don't mean to doubt your story, but just curious as to the skill level of the GTR driver? we all know that on a track, driver counts at least as much as the equipment, so could it be that you're a much better pilot than the GTR owner/driver?

if you were running in the same group, that suggests grouping in terms of TIME right? but not necessarily experience?

finally, also interesting to note that his performance seemed to drop off... wonder how much of this has to do with you getting faster vs his car beginning to feel the strain of many hard laps (stamina being a strength of Porsches we all recognize).

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

PCA run groups are based on driver experience and skill, Chris is in the Red group, the highest non-instructor grouping. So driver skills should be very close.

    Re: Tangled with a GTR.......

    Yep.
