When Clarkson did it on Top Gear he simply pulled straight up and it came off..He did it intentionally of course to make Porsche look bad, which is his M.O. when testing anything Porsche.
Thats the important bit.... there is a locking ring under there that engages the slot in the actual stick. Pulling the cover up lets you get at the ring, rotate it 90 deg and then the thing should just pull straight up by the knob.

Jesus, so that advice was wrong. Bloody makes me worried as thats what the OPC said you do to me when I had the Sport Shifter installed. Bloody idiots and sorry for the duff advice. Thats sucks.
Also, when men find that the sufficient application of force solved their problem, they feel perfectly ok about that solution being 'the correct process' and will gladly repeat that procedure and tell others to do the same. Nevermind the stripped or broken/damaged parts they leave in their wake.
