    Going to drive a PDK this week

    What should I be looking for as I drive the car? What should I test?

    Re: Going to drive a PDK this week

    I drove today a 997.2 S with PDK. Here is my impression:

    Engine
    ==========

    The engine is elastic, likes to rev and sounds great. It has the typical 911 idling sound (we all love) with the added injector ticking, which is OK.
    Lots of power/torque, fast revving without any glitches.

    Transmission
    ==========

    D mode - launches are ultra smooth, and parking lot creeping and driveway ramps are driven with ultra smoothness, absolutely seamlessly. Transmission shifts are ultra smooth and the engine seems to be in a good torque range for moderate driving. Even in D mode one can shift using the steering wheel paddles, say to downshift quickly. D reverts to auto mode if no manual input is entered after a few seconds. The gear in use is shown on the display window, even in auto mode.

    Sport mode - (for Sport Chrono models). It holds gears to redline and shifts as if one is driving in a spirited mode. Simply awesome and still seamless.

    Sport Plus mode - gear changes are even more aggressive and yes one feels the gear change. I have not much use for this mode or its associated Launch Mode either (which I obviously did not try on a brand new car).

    Manual Mode - Shifting either by using the paddles or the gear lever works very well. I have no problem with the paddles at all - it just makes sense. The tranny behaves as a regular 6-speed manual sans clutch and the difference is seamless shifts (I also tried Sport and Sport Plus mode).

    When the car stops it always starts in 1st gear. The 1st gear cog ratio is outstanding. Coming out of a stop into a 90deg turn one just revs the 1st gear smoothly through the turn without a need to shift mid-turn.

    Suspension
    ==========

    This S has the new PASM suspension which I think is even better than the 997.1 PASM. I think that PAG sorted out the valving perfectly. The car was perfectly balanced, communicative, comfortable and with no surprises. PAG also tuned the front suspension and the annoying 911/996 front bobbing is gone. I also tried PASM Sport and although firmer it was not jarring. This car did not have LSD - a good option to consider.

    Other Items
    ==========

    The interior console is indeed cleaner and the audio inputs in the center console are welcome.

    The side-rearview mirrors are actually nice as they show a far wider view.

    The external cosmetic changes look fine. The front bumper is cleaner and well honed. Same for the rear - the light changes actually make for a softer look. Well done!

    thanks for the review...

    Re: Going to drive a PDK this week

    @ADias: thanks for your observations So, are you tempted to switch to a 997 Mk2 from your Corvette?

    My current plan is to keep my 997 C2S MkI till around 1 or 2 years into the model life cycle of the next 991TT - as far as I can guess, this will be introduced during 2012 (as a MY13 car). So I might keep my current car till 2014 since I prefer the first couple of years of prduction gremlins to be ironed out and also I like to wait until all the options (especially interior styling) are fully available. This is all on the assumption that the next 911 (the 991) does in fact come out in 2011 (as a MY12 car).

    My reasoning for not upgrading to a MkII is that, although the MkII is much more than just a facelift (new DFI engines, PDK, new PCM etc etc), when I trade in my current 911, I want it to be for something that actually looks like a new model. The MkII 997 doesn't LOOK different enough on the inside or on the outside to make me tempted. Although my head knows of the major changes in the MkII, I need to FEEL like (and be visually reminded that) it's something genuinely new. I almost wish Porsche had been a bit more bold with the exterior styling on the MkII... guess they must be holding that back for the 991

    Let's see how it goes - will be interesting to see the new 991 and how the long term impact over the next 5 years of the credit crunch, rising fuel prices, environmental concerns will all affect the end product...

    Yup. Thanks for that e_r! It just clicked for me. You made it exciting to begin to study various anticipations of new developments and thus start thinking of what to replace my current P-unit with and when.

    Oh..., hopefully to trade in before current warranty runs out.

    LOL.
