    PDK is Awesome

I just wanted to say that we received our First Carrera S Coupe with PDK , and Sport Chrono, and it has truly blown me away...... I am not saying that I would prefer it to a
    6 Speed, for my personal ownership, ( I have an ' 06 S 6 Sp)
but It's going to make people think, what they really want .
I think when real veteran, Porsche customers drive it; there will be a rush for this new experience.... Porsche cars predicts 50/50 ; I don't think so. 80/20 is more like it; and I am a die hard Shifting , rev matching; heel toeing nut case; and it's obvious to me.This PDK does everything, perfectly. When I drove the first car yesterday,
I got kinda choked up; because I was driving what we have all been waiting for; for about 2 decades. A sequentiial gearbox, direct injection Monster with Launch Control !
Speaking of that; oh Boy. That is the best .... It actaully
feels like it's lighting up the tires a little bit.The acceleration is tremendous. The way it bangs second gear is
just right. The shifts in this PDK are absolutely un-audible
in normal mode, when driving the car smoothly. You just watch the gear indicator go from 1 to 7 with virtually no knowledge that it's actually changing gear. That's great..
Then when you engage Sport Plus, oh my Gosh...the shifts are instantaneous ( 1/1000 Second ) and very satisfying
every time. I think it's great that if you go to max RPM in any gear; it doesn't shift up , as a default. It's sits on the rev limiter untill you shift up. Just like a manual box.
That's the way it should be. If any of you don't order Sport Chrono, with you PDK; forget about it .........
    Porsche call's it " Tune-ability " . You have Normal, Sport,
and Sport Plus; all with different characters of driving.
Not to mention "Launch Control"..... good luck trying to re-sell a PDK with out Sport Chrono.....The new 3.8 liter motor
pulls like a freight train, all the way to the top. You can feel the efficiency of that 12.5 to 1 compression ratio, all of the time; not to mention the DFI effect ! Great new
    911 motor ! I'm sure the 3.6 will be super, too.Furthermore,
don't forget to order the new Dynamic Cornering Lights, unless you want last years headlight assemblies; on your New
997....... The shifting position , and operation, on the new thick PDK steering wheel take's a little getting used to, but then it's intuative. I don't know what all the
hoopla is all about. It feel great. You can always shift on the very mechanical feeling shift knob, which is right on.

I think that you will agree; this is a very High Performance advancement made by Porsche ! This new Carrera
S is a Super Car ! I hope you will share my opinion; when you get a chance to experience it.

    Re: PDK is Awesome

PAG recommends never to exceed 4200RPM during the 2000-mile break in... and you used launch control on a brand new car??

However enthused you may be let's stop hyperbole... the PDK does not do any shift in 1/1000s, fast, yes, but not that fast. Let's just not exaggerate.

    Edit: break-in miles

    Re: PDK is Awesome

It's 2000 miles, unless they changed it ; and it's OUR Demo.Have you driven it. Would you NOT do it. Give me a break; I'm sure we haven't damaged it .....You know that Porsche AG Dynos every motor; 5 Minutes at Redline.....
I'm sure we haven't hurt it......

That's good to hear that from an authorized dealer. You must be right.

    Re: PDK is Awesome

Any of your cars come in with the new SPASM option?

    Re: PDK is Awesome

Not yet, but it's probably the Hot Setup.....

    Re: PDK is Awesome

    Thanks Larry nice write up.

    Re: PDK is Awesome

My gen 2 C2S has PDK and SPASM - it is awesome. In the UK break in directions are different as you know - I've been close to the red line but am holding off using launch control until I am 1000 miles in!!

The car is very very quick if you want it to be, and also very civilised if you prefer....two weeks in I am still in awe!!!

How does PDK behave in stop-and-go traffic? or slow starts uphill?

    TIA

    Sure... steep underground garage ramps.

    Yeh, OK.

I just enjoyed a mental image of Larry taking his demo car back out to to test a hill start up a speed bump, until I remembered the ramps up to the intracoastal waterway bridges.

Its all taken into account, when you use launch control in a car still in break-in, the revs will climb only to 4500RPM before letting go of the brake. After the brake-in period, the revs will then be allowed to reach the 6500RPM on the launch control (I think its 6500RPM) required for the launch
So no problem in using launch control in cars still on the brake-in period

That's interesting, but Revvv referred to shifting at redline and hitting the rev limiter.

    Re: PDK is Awesome

    note to self:
    NEVER buy a demo.

I was refering just to the launch control, you can hit the redline in normal shifting but interestingly when activating the launch control, the revs are auto limited to 4500RPM, on the initial launch in first gear, then afterwards the shift to second, third and so on can be to the redline.

You can see it here in the vicdeo I made, the demo car I had just under 2000miles:

Thinking about it, limiting revs to 4500 rpm in the gears for driving in non-launch-control modes could be potentially very dangereous. Think of hitting rev limiter at that engine-speed during overtaking maneuvers, for instance.

That would explain why this rev limit should not be rigidly applied by the ECU throughout the break-in period, tho it would be technically possible.

    Re: PDK is Awesome

Fritz, I really do appreciate your input! But there doesn't appear to be any imposed rev limiter by the ECU to me,in the breakin petiod. It launches as it would normally.
I will tell you something, that I don't think anyone is aware of, that was told to me by someone at Porsche Cars.
The launch sequence can be accomplished ; only every 90 seconds. It allows the clutches , and trans fluid to cool
off. Maybe on a car that's truly broken in; I'll have the
    pleasure to verify that !

    Re: PDK is Awesome

Many thanks for the write-up Larry.

It's the first review thats made me want to go and try PDK.
