911 future as per Car Magazine

Car Magazine predicts the Future 911.

I have a feeling that the 997.2 will be the last of the classic 911s. The air-to-water cooling and 996 changes notwithstanding.

P.S. - Notice the predicted front re-design (not shown in the test mules) to comply with the senseless EU pedestrian laws...

The future will be very interesting. Hard to know what the new car will be like to drive, until we have a go. As for last of the Classic 911's, hard to say (it's been said before):

1968: Last of the short wheelbase cars
1969: Last of the revvy 2.0L cars
1973: Last of the lightweight long-hood Mechanically Injected Cars
1977: Last of the Narrow-bodied cars
1989: Last of the manual steering, torsion bar suspension actual "911"
1994: Last of the truly hand-built cars
1998: Last of the aircooled cars
2005: Last of the cars without PSM or Traction Control (GT3)
2008: Last of the GT1-based dry sump cars (Turbo, GT2, GT3)?
2011: Last of the cars without pedestrian protection front ends
2015: Last of the cars to run on gasoline???

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

Yeah Grant. But you know what I mean, better than most - just look at your car.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

    Re: Grant:

It seems like the 911 is evolving into something that is NOTHING like the original... except the most basic silhouette... sad times

    Re: ADias' CAR magazine link:
While CAR magazine is probably the best motoring publication imo... this time I believe they are wrong.

This picture gives it away. They claim they are developing a new 911 with a wider body, but the basic body of this car is VERY 997. it looks like they are doing aero tests for a wider body, perhaps special edition model - the ducktail-like spoiler is very interesting.

The reason this picture is NOT a new 911 is because the widebody wheel arches are NOT filled. Looks much more like an aero test than a drivetrain test.

Also note how the front side markers curve along with the new wide arches in front. Seems almost production ready - much too soon iron out such a small, lighting addenda detail if it were for a far-off, next gen 911.

Something tells me this is a close to production with extra wide wheel arches and a ducktail.

I don't mean to say anything negative about the 997.2. I think it's a very cool car and I'd love to have one. But trying to choose a future classic is a very tough thing to do.

I predicted that the 2004 GT3 would be a classic in 2003 (and it still may be), but the pricing has become rather soft lately.

I bought my current car when it was already 30 years old, so it was a bit easier to find its place in history...

I think that I was not clear. I was aguing that it appears that going forward PAG will stray farther from the 911 concept. I think that if they fatten the front bumper and raise the hood to satisfy EU regs it will be a mortal nail in the coffin. My comment re your car is that you certainly have what all fans accept as a 911 classic. In my view there are many 911 classics - the original, the 911S, the 2.7RS the 930 the 993 and no the 997 with the 997.2 sharpening up the latest iteration.

I thought the higher "pedestrian-proof" front applied to front engined cars because according to the regulation anything "solid" like the engine, must be at a certain distance from the edge of the car. This makes the hood longer and therefore stylists have to make the front more upright in order to mainatain the proportions (e.g. latest Mercedes SL fecelift.)

Georg Kacher write also for Autobild?

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

    Nice reading, thanks.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

with a new engine that is more powerful and lighter, in conjunction with the PDK, I predict that the next gen 911 will be better than ever.

I don't think any of them will become classic or collector though as they are too mass produced.

Im with Moodle on this one. As discussed many times over on other forums. This picture is NOT the next 911 or 991. It's rather to me looks like a new Cerrera RS version. Duck tail, wide body arches, roll bar...

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

i agree with you tim. the best 911 is the next 911. that being said, i do understand the other side of the arguement. i love our 73 rs and would never let it go.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

guys have you seen the SAME mules of the Cayman!

    Same wheel arches!!!

    Same finished side indicators!!!!

possibly. however if you look at the spy photos of the next gen gt3 those test mules have the bigger wings. if this was the rs version i would assume it to would have the bigger wing, not the duck tail. just a guess though.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

Gr8 read, thanks for sharing and ugly car btw it no longer has that 997TT appeal

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

maybe its the angle but that cayman looks nice, almost the curvey side the pan was supposed to have.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

FWIW: this car's sidemarkers shown in lower right. All others are early 997.1.

Re: 911 future as per Car Magazine

Did you remember that active rear spoiler patent?
