    Absolute nightmare

Hi guys following on from my post about the intermediate shaft noise i did drop my car of at my local porsche dealership on tuesday just gone, to inspect the cause of the horrible grinding noise i hear between 10-30mph.
I heard from them on friday and they told me that after comparing the car against others the sound is not normal and could be a possible engine problem. Meaning that the car may require a new engine. Luckily the car is under warranty; but what should i look out for and furthermore what should i be asking for? Ive only had the car a month and i have a problem already. Can anyone give me any guidance??

    Re: Absolute nightmare

1 month , i would expect them to give me a new car!!!!!

    Re: Absolute nightmare

its not a brand new car its an 07 plate.

    Re: Absolute nightmare

No Problema!!! You'll get a new "short block" and they'll have it all installed for you in a day or so.

AFAIK, there was some discussion a while ago and it means practically nothing that your car has had an engine "replacement" as far as resale is concerned. Porsche changes all the numbers in their computer system so everything will match and the car will be considered original.

A "short block" is a fully functional basic engine crankcase which all the other components must be bolted onto.

I could be wrong about the SB too, you might get a new complete engine that they can hoist into the car in an afternoon.

Relax and have a beer. After a few days of carlessness you'll be as good as new.

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Don't sweat a new engine. As far as I know, a short block is simply the assembled block, crank and pistons, without cylinder heads. The long block includes the heads. But, I believe porsche just gives you a complete crate engine, fully assembled.

Guy in office had a Boxster engine intermediate shaft go. He got what he called a "short block." It included everything except stuff that bolts on (ac, air intake, alternator, etc.). I think he's right because variocam and heads would be a SOB to install w/o factory expertise. He could have messed up the terminology but I'm sure he got the whole engine (heads, cams, crakcase etc) BUT without the "bolt on" components mentioned above..

You're probably correct "longblock" _does_ seem to make more sense though.

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Thanks alot for your answers youve really helped. lets see waht happens then. Will i have to follow the run in procedure again or should i be ok to go as normal?

    Re: Absolute nightmare

If you require a completely new 'crate' engine, then I would expect you to have to 'break it in' as you would with any other new engine in the usual way...

    Re: Absolute nightmare

An IS failure is sudden without warning.

Probably in your case it is another problem, hopefully less severe.

Oh yeah..., Good point reginos! I think that's absolutely right. I heard many times there's also suddenly a big puddle of oil under the car.

Nice that that oil puddle gives the less experienced car guy a..., how you say..., huge fkn clue!

    Re: Absolute nightmare

If the car is under warranty you get a new engine. Have to break it in all over again.

    Re: Absolute nightmare

After all that i got a call today from the technician saying that he has taken the rear bumper off and listened to other cars and now the grinding scraping sound seems normal. I dont know what these guys are playing at. Hes offered to let me listen in to another car. I think ill have to end up living with this annoying sound>

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Awwwgh! Take it to another dealer? There's often a big difference in the knowledge base of the technicians from one dealer to another. I noticed that a few years ago.

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Just make sure that's documented in the svc record. my c4s had a IS, it made a rattling sound for months before....it went. Usually blows suddenly, but your car sounds like you're shaking a can of marbles for awhile first. At least that was my experience. The dealer also said the sound was normal on several occasions, it wasn't until after I traded it in on the TT did it blow, I think on the used car auction block someplace when it let loose..

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Thanks for that, when i picked the car up the technician showed me two other cars that made the same noise albeit not as loud as mine. They have classified it as being a characteristic of the car. Cheeky service woman tried to charge me Pounds25 per day for the 7 days they had my car????? Not the kind of service you expect when you pay that kind of money for a car. Im going to live with it for the moment and see how i get on havn't really got any other option...............

    Re: Absolute nightmare

Get a second opinion , sounds iffy...

    Re: Absolute nightmare

had enough of the noise it was really irritating me yesterday so i had to go to watford which is 50 mile round trip i would normally take the other car for a motorway blast (bmw m5) but i thought screw it ill take the turbo. Anyway i hammered it all the way there and all the way back. Thats the first time i have ever driven it like that . The speed was awesome the handling was amazing the car felt free and alive. MOST OF ALL the noise is gone. There was no noise for about 4 hours. But im going to give it a try now hopefully there will be no noise. Will keep you informed

Oh Boy! I _HATE_ when that happens. When it happens to me I start wondering if I'm going crazy.

"Is it me or is it this tricky car? It's the car Right? It's not me. Gotta be the CAR, RIGHT? RIGHT??!! Can't be me..., it's the car..., gotta be..., yes..., it's the car..., NOT ME!"

    Good luck Ashan!

Disclaimer: above contains an obvious grammatical error for the sake of jocularity: "me" is incorrect, proper grammar dictates personal pronoun usage should be "I."

Sounds like another successful italian tune up

    Re: Absolute nightmare

All UK 997's it seems to me, sound like diesels on start up if all they do is trickle around. at least once a month, "drive it like you sole it" (not sure how said this on here!) and you'll find that all the creepy noises & smells simply disappear! It's amazing.

Having said that, a chum has had two engines replaced on his 2006 997 turbo. (he does drive like an arse though)

    Re: Absolute nightmare

hi guys just thought id update you the car is still lovely and best of all noise free. Some little [beep] has stolen my tyre valve covers but its all fun and games
