    Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ operation

Recently, I have been getting 4 - 4.5 bar oil pressure on and off when the car at normal oil temp after 15 - 20 miles of driving. Is it normal??? Does anyone experience the same? Should it be a concern?

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ operation

That is a normal oil pressure for medium to high engine speeds. I assume by "on and off" you mean when the motor is idling it is low and when the motor is running harder the pressure is higher?

The old rule of thumb is that the oil pressure is approximately 1 to 1.5 Bar per 1,000 rpm and does not exceed 4.5 to 5 Bar at any engine speed. The oil pump is mechanically driven and its speed is proportional to engine speed (revs). Pressure increases with revs.

Also, pressure is higher when the oil is cold, since the viscosity is much higher then.

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ operation

Actually, it was at 4 - 4.5 bar at idle when it is at full operation temp. When I said on and off, I mean some time it does that and other time it is what I call normal that is at 1.5 bar at idle. I have the car since new and it is at 21k now. The pressure is alway at noramal as you describe until recently acting strange.

Oh, then it sounds like you most likely have a malfunctioning oil pressure sender or a loose ground somewhere.

    Here's some examples, FWIW:

I am thinking the same thing. I will talk to my service adviser when I take mine in for the annual oil service toward the year of the year.

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ operation

Is it only me got this "problem". Can anyone share with their experience if any. Thanks.

I'm still not sure from the above posts.

When you are doing 60-70-80 mph is your oil pressure needle pegged (at 5+)?

If so my bet is you'ver got nothing to worry about.

    How about this?

Does your P-car dealer/service sell/service other mfgr's cars? Maybe some chimp-brained assistant service guy thought non-Mobil1 oil used in other cars would be just fine for yours.

Get them to do an oil change (or do it yourself) with known Mobil1 and see if there's a difference.

Tomorrow's Sunday: give yourself a simple oil change. See if problem is solved. You can get crush washers for the oil plug where you buy the oil. BTW, probably no need for you to change filter at this point (unless you have one in your garage).

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ opera

MMD. Thanks for your advise. However, I don't think is the oil. I got my 20K service in Jan this year that is 9 mos ago. The oil pressure always been "normal" since new until recently (last 2 - 3 weeks). 80% of the time I have "normal" oil pressure and for whatever reason, on "selected" day, I have this "high" oil pressure issue. I think I maybe sansor or oil pump issue. I don't know and that is the reason I post the question here. I hope I can get some advise before I talk to the service advisor.

It's almost certainly not the oil pump. It's the sender, wiring, or gauge (in order of probability).

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ opera

Thanks Grant. If that is the case, I would think I should not be concerned about the engine preformance and it should only be the matter of the reading. Is that correct? Does anyone has that problem or just me?

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ opera

My oil pressure gauge on a 2005 C2S has been pegged at 5 at all times since I got the car. I actually asked my dealer about it initially, since I assumed a pressure gauge on a car, like a temperature gauge, would be scaled to show some middle value under normal use. I was told pegged at 5 was normal.

49,500 miles later it is still maxed out at all times. I shift typically between 3-4,000 RPM and rarely go above 5,000 RPM.

Upon ignition and with the engine at idle, the needle rises to 5 in under 5 seconds and stays there until I turn the engine off.

    Re: Oil pressure @ 4 - 4.5 bar when engine @ opera

I think you can relax until you get the P-service guys to assess the situation. There's a warning message on the dash when things get serious.

    Thanks MMD.

    No problema!

We all hope it's just a loose wire.
