Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

Took mex99's photo of 997.2 PCM and put it next to similar old one.

    What do you think?

No big deal or major aesthetic change?

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

Functional/user interface changes are more much more significant/important than any aesthetic ones.

System is still very cluttered compared to the more modern iDrive/MMI style interfaces. Love the layout in the new ferrari california.

Porsche should consider a system like this to minimize clutter inside what should be a minimalist cabin - since you KNOW they have to cram all this tech inside their cars, they should make it a bit more hidden.

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

Do we know which maps the nav system uses for north america? Is it Navteq or tele atlas?

    Thanks
    Michael

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

no big deal. especially when you have pcm covered in leather or non standard graphite look.

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

i have been in both and the new one looks a million times better and is much more easier to use.

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

the '09 USA 997 Order Guide doesn't show the PCM leather option.

Are you holding BMW's unfathomable iDrive as a paragon of virtue ?

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

I keep seeing folks refer to iDrive as though it's poor. I've been using it for over a year now and can't say it's a problem at all. Perhaps I'm part German but it seems logical enough to me - more so than the Porsche PCM system.

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

Yeah, I gotta say they both look still like uninspired cop car equipment. Not much improvement.

I'm sure the new one has improved software. Old one sux.

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

I'd prefer to have a labeled button I can press directly over less controls that I have to navigate through multiple clicks any day. I don't mind the aircraft-cockpit look.

I'd be interested in what you folks that don't like the PCM 3 layout can come up with that would work better. Mock them up and post them here... maybe Porsche will get some ideas from us?

    +1

Re: Compare These 997.1 and 997.2 PCMs

A couple of things turn me off about the new design. (1) touch screens are tough to keep clean looking; (2) the hard drive system dictates that updates can ONLY be performed at your dealer. (Currently, you can make a copy of a DVD and use it to run the system). It's all about control,--and Porsche now have exclusive control over the s/w loaded into the hard drive.

    Yup.

Porsche outsourced PCM software development. First time the outline was in German and they had to impose a crushing deadline.

The second time around they had more time and were inexplicably drawn to eastern European consultants.

    Here's proof:

Howso? The hard drive software is updated via some computer with software on it, and a cable that interfaces to the car. The cable can be replicated, and the software on the computer can also be replicated. There is no reason the updating of the PCM software has to require a dealer visit. There is nothing hack-proof about these cars.
