    Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

    http://www.drivers-republic.com/features/

Nice to hear that the supercharger does nothing to spoil the purity of its V8.

We are lining up an interesting group test for the ZR1, which should put its performance in context, but I'd be interested to hear what you would like to see it compared with.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

    0 - 200km/h in 10.3s

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Since I'm a bit lazy about searching for them myself, could you guys post other sport cars' 0-200km/h?

That is a tough choice. In terms of performance, both acceleration and laptimes, my first consideration was the Zonda F. However it is appalling to see that the ZR1 provides similiar for only a fraction of cost. Having driven the Z06 myself the modifications that went into the stronger version, especially the modified steering, suspension and gearshift, clear out most previous flaws.

I still see the GT2 as the hardest competitor, both in performance and both cars' focus on honest solid components instead of fancy electronics and, as mentioned in the article, their ability to improve performance figures for pure appearance only. Having said that, I would be happy to pay the premium for the GT2 as their price difference in Europe is rather small, on top of that it may put pressure on the enormous premium charge some Porsche dealers seem to justify for the GT2. So afterall, it is a good thing to have one more model to choose from.

Regarding the power-to-weight figure, I'd love to see a comparison to the Caterham R500, especially their behaviour over a timed lap.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Ferdie, how about the AMG SL65 Black Series? and perhaps the Ferrari 599 GTB?

It will be impossible to match performance within a similar price range, but a performance grudge match would be far more interesting I think.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Both are surely great competitors. Interesting however how close the SL Black Series and ZR1 seem to have come on paper, Mercedes converting the poised car for the elderly into an object with huge presence but questionable style. GM intends to elevate the Corvette into sportscar circles that it has been refused entrance to so far. Just with the difference that the first one costs twice the money?

The 599 GTB might loose some of its technological charm once it is opposed to the ZR1 which might possibly be on par on most aspects. I do not think an LP640 for example would loose any of its charm in comparison.

Although short on power on paper, the most interesting rival for me would be the GT-R, preferably in V-spec, since both show a perfection of basic concepts that rival the familiar European brands.

However in terms of performance those cars are surely suitable, if only for the different characters they might expose in comparison.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

I have been active on Rennteam for nearly five years and one of the aspects I enjoy about the forum is the balanced viewpoint.

The interest of cars such as the ZR1 and GT-R is the way that they throw the 'cat-amongst-the-pigeons', causing established brands such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini and AMG to try harder to maintain their elite status.

The winner is the customer, since (hopefully) it keeps prices low, forces manufacturers to provide more and gives us plenty to talk about.

I would like to see the ZR1 compete with supercar brands such as Lamborghini and Pagani, whilst also competing on the track with cars such as the GT2. We can assess it in terms of muscle, drama and handling performance. One aspect that came across from our review of the ZR1 was how easy (i.e. friendly) it was to extract performance from (without relying on invasive traction or stability control). This makes it really interesting to compare with a 599 GTB, which has been one of the nicest handling powerful front-engined RWD cars to drive.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

BTW, German price for ZR1 is little bit above Euro 135K with Mwst... It is not cheap any more. Despite huge power...

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

That's right, we were told Pounds100k here in the UK, which is a shame since it puts it right up there at 997 Turbo prices but hampered by an interior that would be more in keeping at half the price.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

I personally think the interior looks nice enough at normal 'Vette prices, but European prices might put some people off.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

I'd love to see it compared to

    - 997 GT2 (obviously)
    - 599 GTB (for it's GT-credentials)
    - Caterham R500 (to rival its performance)
    - Modded Z06 (if possible to find it would be very interesting to see if it's possible to create a better car when spending the extra money on improving a Z06 than spend it on the more expensive ZR-1)
    - A car of similar price to put its value for money into perspective

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

I have a friend who is taking delivery of a Shelby Ford Mustang GT500KR soon, but there is also a 700bhp version of this available.

Would it be worth trying to line one of these up?

The Ford might be able to compete in a drag race (but I doubt it), but in any other test the ZR-1 will be in a far higher class. Even the top Mustang models use a solid rear axle, afaik...

I think its natural competition (for US pricing anyways) would be the Nissan GT-R V-Spec.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

The way I see it there's no real competitor that you can put the ZR1 up against, because all comparisons would be a bit off in one way or another; comparing cars in a similar price range is no point, and comparing cars with similar performance leaves you with very different price tags.

Even though the Vette has an image of being a performance bargain, I really don't think many potential customers will choose between a ZR1 and a Ferrari, Lambo or mega Merc. If you're willing to part with seriously big bucks for a Ferrari you're not just buying performance but also exclusivity, image, myth, heritage and perhaps most important - the status.

I really don't see a lot of people stepping down in image/status and price even if gets them a bit better performance. I think there's a bigger chance that more enthusiasts might consider stepping up a little bit in price for a lot more performance.

That's why I'd like to see a comparison that looks both ways. Put it against something with a similar price (in Europe), such as a GT3 RS, and something with similar hp/performance, like a 599 or the SL 65 Black. That way we can see how much more performance you can get for a little bit more money, and also how many supercar poseurs you can embarrass for a lot less money.

But whatever comparison you guys do, I'd really like to see something that focuses on the performance. Take the cars to a track, invite a professional driver, compare times, etc. Oh, and don't complain about the Vette's interior and its quality, we all know it's not on par with a Porsche's and I don't think anyone expects it to be either.

Good luck! Looking forward to what you can come up with

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Saggy car. One big problem GM apparently can't see much less solve:

Other problems: too much ornamentation in form of creases, vents, lines and points.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

MMD, they say you should never discuss religion, money or taste because it usually never ends well. So, I'll just settle for saying that I don't agree with you about the Vette's styling.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

Thanks John, I agree there is no real direct competitor, the main reason for a group test is to provide context.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could compare it with ALMS GT1 class competitors..

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

    why not a Cgt?

Looks to me like you drew a 911 silhouette with that " red marker ".

    What about a Viper ACR?

I think the suggestions so far are great, 599, reventon, Ford GT, audi R10, ........... but what it should go up against is another super-charged V8 front engine, rear transaxle car from a european sporst car manf.

    A murf super-charged porsche 928.

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

The GT-R is the only car that comes to mind which makes them fall in the same category (price wise).

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

    Compare apples to apples:

    2008 Dodge Viper ACR
    8.4 litre V10
    600 HP and 560 lb/ft
    $98,810 USD

"For those who need the numbers, we still ran it through our usual instrumented tests. It pulled a 1.1g on the skid pad and stopped from 60 mph to zero in just 100 feet. It went from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, just like the standard model, but the ACR did run a slightly faster quarter-mile time of 11.6 seconds at 124.2 mph"

"Dodge says the rear spoiler on the ACR generates 1,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph, yet the rear end still gets loose at 120 mph in 3rd gear, so we drop it into 4th."

Re: Drivers Republic: Corvette ZR1 Review

ACR is a pretty serious track weapon for just under 6 figures right off the showroom floor...

No problem. People like it and buy it.

I look at them and my eyes burn and I get a headache..

FWIW, I'd definitely buy one if it had a better, perhaps more Ford GT -ish Body. This styling is too "Pontiac Firebird" for me.

    Oh well... .

    LOL.

Maybe , but the big difference is the 911 profile doesn't look like it's broken in the middle.
